Sarah, I like to run my Variability and limits at 10. This gives more tones but it also makes the Silver and coin sounds more obvious. Try dropping the Iron mask to -10 also. Do you press the Noise cancel button when you start off or when you change areas? When you do this, make sure the coil is on the ground and hold it perfectly still until it goes through it's cycle. This can also help stabilize the unit and eliminate chatter.
