RE: Monte XLT vs MXT

Hello Monte,
I'm going to finally purchase an MXT, thanks to you and the rest of the gang on the forum. I seem to only hear good thing about it.
I currently own an XLT and a surf PI. My first question is: Beside being a possible backup, does the XLT have any strengths over the MXT? Most people whom I've talk with who own an XLT or DFX state that once they bought and started using the MXT, they have never used their other machine again. I'm just curious if you still have an XLT and using it from time to time?
I like land hunting for coins and also beach hunting in Santa Cruz. The XLT works fairly well in the dry sand area but usually goes crazy in wet sand and near the surf, which is why I have the surf PI. Have you tried the MXT on the beach? How well does it work? What coil would work well there? I currently have a 5.3, 950 and 3x6 for it. Is there a better one to buy?
Thanks Monte.
Also, thanks for all your valuable input to the hobby. I truly enjoy reading your post and you have alway helped me get the most out of the hobby. You actually helped me make the decision to buy the XLT 4.5 years ago when I gave you a phone call. It has been a great machine for me.
Thanks again.
Sincerely,
Rick

Well, there certainly have been a lot of 'good' things said about the MXT, but perhaps you've read past some of the 'bad' things some folks have stated.
Don't get me wrong, the MXT is a very fine detector and has a lot of potential, but since there is still no 'perfect' detector made, we have to have patience and learn and master what we do have to work with.
Since you're used to the XLT after these past several years, I will tell you that there is a chance you'll have a difficult time getting used to the MXT. Perhaps not, but just be prepaired to muster all the patience you can as you work with it.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">I currently own an XLT and a surf PI. My first question is: Beside being a possible backup, does the XLT have any strengths over the MXT?</FONT>"</STRONG>.... The easy answer is, Yes, it does.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">Most people whom I've talk with who own an XLT or DFX state that once they bought and started using the MXT, they have never used their other machine again.</FONT>"</STRONG>.... Often these are people who might not like the touchpad design with the scrolling menu options, or people who just prefer knobs, or some who might not have mastered the XLT or DFX and perhaps do better with the slower-sweep models (such as the MXT). I do know that many people have found the MXT to provide better audio depth compared to either an XLT or DFX.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">I'm just curious if you still have an XLT and using it from time to time?</FONT>"</STRONG>.... Yes, there are times when I find the XLT 'enjoyable' to hunt with. I consider the XLT (or an XL Pro) to be a great unit for 'cruising' wide-open, low-target sites.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">I like land hunting for coins and also beach hunting in Santa Cruz. The XLT works fairly well in the dry sand area but usually goes crazy in wet sand and near the surf, which is why I have the surf PI.</FONT>"</STRONG>.... I do not get to the coastal beaches as often as I would perhaps like to, but I enjoy hunting the fresh water river beaches around here more, anyway.
When I do make it to the coast, hunting dry upper-beach sand or down in the 'wet zone,' I can do 'OK' with an XL Pro or XLT, but that's mainly because I know how to quickly set the Discriminate level so as not to have to deal with the conductive salts. Obviously, it is much eassier to set it with the XL Pro due to the external knobs.
While I don't have a real 'problem' using them in the wet zone, I still prefer to use my IDX Pro.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">Have you tried the MXT on the beach?</FONT>"</STRONG>.... Yes, I have. Several times with various coils.
<STRONG>"<FONT COLOR="#ff0000">How well does it work? What coil would work well there? I currently have a 5.3, 950 and 3x6 for it. Is there a better one to buy?</FONT>"</STRONG>.... It did 'OK,' but I still prefer to use my IDX Pro w/950. The MXT didn't do so well with the 950, at least for me. I had better results with the 5.3 Eclipse coil than I did the 950. Also better with the 5.3 Eclipse than the 6x9 or 6x10, whatever thay decide to call their DD.
I had <EM>coverage</EM> with the 14" EXcelerator coil, but depth on smaller coins wasn't really quite as good a response as the 950 or 5.3 Eclipse. The 12

He hasnt witten any books. I would like to see a series of books written buy Monte on detecting. It would be nice to have a book on the MXT. I am very
grateful for people like Monte. Its rare this day to find people who are willing to give so much of there
self without asking anything in return. Somebody out

Thanks Monte, Barry

Here are some good hints & tips for the MXT gleaned from various posts.
Hope this helps,
