Re: Iron

I've been detecting for 3-4 yrs., 4-5 mos w/ an XS. Iron gives me HUGE headaches, I try using Iron mask @ 16 , zero,10 etc. & still have alot of trouble pinpointing a good target , sometimes even w/ a 5 SR coil. Then targets jump all over the screen making it nearly impossible to tell if the target is a good one. I usually run in auto , sens. around 24 (more w/ small coil)& hunt on iron mask smart screen. Also cond. tone . If I change to ferrous , how will tones change & will it help disciminate between iron & good stuff. Sorry for such a long question, any help is appreciated. Kent

Ferrous sounds will make a lower tone when the target is closer to the left hand side of the screen and it will make higher pitched tones (good stuff) when it goes to the right hand side of the screen.
For an experiment, you might want to create a custom discrimination field that leaves only the top 1/3 of the screen open. This is what I use from time to time when I am hunting only for coins. Expect alot of null sounds, too <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">
Turn off auto sensativity and stick to 24 or so until you are comfortable with it.
The important thing is that you use your ears, not your eyes. If you get a repeatable high tone, it is time to dig.
Hope this helps!
Tim
