DUCTMAN

New member
Was hopen someone like maybe golden or beachguy,or anyonelse could give me a clue what I found in my hole, looks kinda like a privy hole, theres bits of glass, metal chunks plus pieces of ? melted also looks like charcoal briqetts in your bbq,the top and lower half of a skull plus lots of bones looks like maybe a possum, some of the bones looked like they may have been sawn on,also a couple very rusts nails earlier while I was digging.I stopped at about 3 ft,thats where the skull pieces were, there is still things deeper but I qiut and coverd the hole.my MD was getting some good readings,I even sifted the dirt, but I dont know what to look for, there is lots of small fragments that could be somthing. It's an 1856 site, thinking about going back with a bigger shovel and open it up,I made a larger sifter using a milk crate.any ideas????
THANKS JOE

Well Joe, sounds like you may have found your first dump, be it old bottles, relics, etc! What I would do is to carefully dig around the dump, uncovering the soil gradually, and see what turns up. Be aware of old bottles where the glass might be fragile. Use a small pick with two ends, a flat blade for scraping the soil away bit by bit, and a sharp pick end, to get in between the relics. Be very careful that at this stage you don't rush to dig everything, or you might break something. Just take your time, and any delicate finds, wrap them in bubble wrap or newspaper, and place in a bucket. I'd really like to see a photo if possible, as it will help give some indication what you have there, mostly for those who live over there. Your dumps are a little different to some of ours. A lot of really old stuff were thrown down mine shafts, or off a hillside, so are buried in shallow soil. We do get bottle dumps that can be quite deep, but I haven't seen a great too many of those in my time. Oh, and whatever you do, wear a pair of good solid leather gloves, like riggers gloves, that will help protect your hands from cuts from broken glass or rusty objects. Anyway, see how you go. I once found a dump with the Quattro, in the most unlikely place. Had I not found it, I very much doubt anyone else would have, considering the location.
Happy digging and detecting!
