hello,
i hope to bring my soverign xs-2 to a gold mine river, where many pieces of gold have been found. would my metal detector pick up
small bits of gold or would i need to pan?and if so, what size would be the smallest.
thanks for all the help,
john

being in cali i used to prospect a little. never with my MD though. I would suggest bringing a pan. just to be on the safe for those little tiny ones you may miss. besides panning is fun. as far as how big of a pan? I dont know i just a reg sized one i bought from a state park years ago...although i am not familair with your detector....have fun and much luck to ya..

I don't know the frequency that your machine runs on. But the closer to 60 Khz the better. So if you can choose frequencies, choose the upper ones. Set it as sensitive as possible. I hate to say it, but with as little discrimination as possible. Small gold will be discriminated out really fast. All metal would be best, but junk will discourage you quickly. If you use discrimination, you will most likely miss any flakes. Nuggets will, depending on size, probably read. Remember, one of the characteristics of discrimination, is based on target strength(size, mass). So a flake would probably read around 0, while a small nugget may read 10, a medium nugget may read 30, and a huge nugget may read 70. It's relevant to size. That is why they make machines specifically for gold hunting. The right frequency and the right ground rejection for the tough ironized sand. Just my thoughts. Good luck! HH

just my guess,i think it would probably get you the nuggets,or help tune you in to an area worthy of panning,i would ask over on the sovereign channel bet they would know! HH!
