Ratphones??

Love them...the best I;ve used,,,bar none.Well built and the audio quality is second to none. You could use them to listen to classical music and hear every frequenqy great....unlike alot of the phones out there that sound like tin cups on a string.Just my .02

I tried them once on my Sovereign and Explorer in the shop and found the volume and tones for me were not loud enough or the tones I couldnt tell much of difference in some. I too have a high pitch hearing loss and need the volume to hear the weak signals and good tone quality to tell the difference in tones and found for the Sovereign the Timberwolf are what I use and do well with them. On the Explorer i found the volume was just too low for me too and found here the Troy Pros work the best for me.
You hear a lot of good about the Ratphones, but you hear the same of others too and they do have a good idea of replaceable cords and seem to be built well too, but for me they will not work for me and my hearing, for many they may do well.

Did you guys use the standard Rats or the Rats with the Sovereign Mod?
I use the Sov mod model..they sound sweet..although,I'm also a musician and my hearing is pretty good.I hear all the minelab tones like notes. The Ghost,,The Widows, the Busters are all crammed in a box at this point.
But use what works best for you.If you are tone deaf or have a large loss of high frequency in your hearing....maybe the cheapest phones you can find would work best...They tend to be tinny sounding with too much high frequency and little to no low frequency.

Pair was given to me. Don't know.

In contrast, the Sunray phones I have are a little too sharp....irritating.Works good on my White's.

I run Sov volume at max, and headphone volume at about half when I use adjustable phones.

The ones I use on my Sovs most of the time are modified Pro 40's. No longer available........elements and 1K resistor all wired in series to cut the volume back to a decent level.

Jet engines do wonders for your ears. Makes them twitchy to certain tones.

You probably noticed that I usually stay away from headphone discussions.

I run into problems with different kinds because of the tone......
When adjusting headphone volume the tone changes on the ones that I have tried. With the volume turned down they sound dull. With the volume turned up they get too sharp.
Seems like when I get them set to the right volume to get the tone I want the volume will be too high or too low for me.

Getting things the way I want is probably not what anyone else would want.

We all have different needs, so I would never suggest that a particular model headphone is the best one for anybody. I will tell you what I use, but will leave it at that.

What we really need is a line of phones with the best features of them all put together, and tone controls or graphic equalizers built in. That would help.

I have seen many post on Headphones over the years and with me and my hearing I try many people recommend to me and have spent up to $185 for a set that were claimed to be the loudest only to find out they were weaker sounding of any I have tried. I also find that like you find some work better with one brand detector and not the other as I found out with the Troy Pros as they are the loudest on my Explorer, but not on my Sovereign and they work good on my MXT. I used to use the Gray Ghost on my Sovereign until I tried the Timberwolfs and it took a few time out, but I notice my finds were getting deeper than before and I was IDing them better too plus I found out over the years that many like the Timberwolfs for the Sovereign over the others.
One thing I will say is I firmly believe in using headphones made for detecting as I am tired of sore ears, lose fitting headphones and cords going bad all the time as they are not made for detecting. The little more they cost is well worth the finds the better headphone will find, plus what is left of my hearing I want to keep as much as possible and don't want a cheap set of headphones that will be hard on my ears.

I found a couple pairs that really sounded good with the Sov, but they waffle stomped my ears. Just can't put up with that.

Must have some coffee now. Blood is not circulating right yet.

That is one thing that is top Priority after volume for me as I want a pair that will fit tight so they don't fall off evey time I bend over, but yet don't fit so tight they squash by ears against my glasses so my ear are sore after using them for a few hours. They also have to block out background noise as I need to hear those little tones changes and yet want them built to last. This is why I don't mind paying more for a set that will do all this compared to the cheap sets that I cant use for than a hour or so before my ears are sore.
Some of these may be a little tight feeling when new too and was told by someone to put them on a basketball over night to stretch them out a bit and they will be fine, but never tried it yet.

If you use Ratphones on a Sov, you will hear more bass. That machine has a lot of low frequency content that is not heard on many headphones. The Dullness you hear is because that is what that machine sounds like and Ratphones have a wide response. Ratphones have a SOV option that compensates by filtering the lows but passing the brighter highs.
Simply, you are hearing what your machine sounds like.

Thanx.

Probably a matter of getting used to them.
I'm used to phones that are sharp but not irritating on the high end, and lower volume on iron buzz low end targets. This makes it easier to ignore the iron response that bothers so many people because you hear it so much of the time, while being able to pick up on a sudden upward shift for non-ferrous targets.

Not in any big hurry to have the rats modified.

Rick, I have a pair of Ratphones that I bought last Dec. and I used them on my T-2 and they are great. Audio, quality, and that long cord makes for a super set of phones. Now for the question. I bought a new Sovereign GT in January and have not tried the Rats with this detector. I'm sure that my Ratphones do not have the Sovereign mod. Will the nonmodified Ratphones still work with my new Sovereign? Thanks. R.L. Johnson

Rick, With wide response headphones, you hear what the Sov really sounds like, which unfortunately is too bassy. Did you get the Sov mod filter with your Rats? That will attenuate the very bottom end and sound more crisp. As for other machines, some like a tin sound, it is what they are used to. Yout GG and Timbers should sound exaclty alike.

I probably need the volume more than anything with my bad hearing but yet the Timberwolfs also have the best tone quality for me. The GG were OK, but since I used the Timberwolfs my finds have increased as the volume is louder plus the tones seem to sing to me with the different tones a lot better than any headphone I have tried on the Sovereigns.
Now what is odd is on my Explorer the Timberwolfs are not as loud, but the Troy Pros are and one the MXT either one works just fine for me.
