Rare Earth Magnets (not the Group)

I finally got my scoop from pro detectors. It is the s/s scoop with 1/4" mesh, 9.5" wide fitted for a wooden handle. I have two questions.

1.) Want to add a Rare Earth Magnet to back of the scoop. I saw someone have a plastic coated (yellow colored) magnet in a picture. Would like to find a site where I could get a plastic coated magnet for the scoop. Will be hunting all saltwater. What size? From where? Is one enough?

2.) How long should I make the handle for the scoop. I bought a 60" wheelbarrow handle. Have 2 of them. I am 6'1" with long arms. Is over 48" overall better? Is longer better?

Aquaman may know the answers to both questions. Anyone chime in !! Thanks,
Marty

Some guy on Ebay is selling the Neodymium Magnet for like $6 bucks...... under Metal detectors / digging tools

Good luck with your Project

Usually, you can get them for free.. Take it apart and use the magnet in it.. You can attach it with silicone and zip strips..

Has worked well for me for years.

Marty,

I have the scoop with the yellow magnet installed, got it from a fellow on ebay a couple of years ago. Here is how I would do it now.

On the handle how deep is the water that you usually hunt. The reason that I ask, when you let go of the handle it will "fall over" until it reaches a state of equalibrium and floats. So if you hunt mostly in waste deep and less I would keep the handle about 4 ft because then the handle usually won't fall out of reach. If you hunt mostly deeper than that 5 of 6 ft. would be better. If you hunt in the ocean and tether the scoop to you then none of this matters. And of course you can always cut some handle off, but you can't put it back on!

Hope this makes some sense and helps a little.

Steve :)

As far as the handle goes remember this.....as you dig in deep waters, the longer handle will help keep your head out of the water as the hole goes down. It will also keep the metal basket farther away from the coil (pi machines) as you drag it behind you. HH

Thanks, Capt
I cut the handle to 50" as I will hunt in waist deep water or less for now (ocean) . I am just starting out with my new Sea Hunter Mark 2. I think I will tether the scoop with a small eye bolt at the end and a line attached to a d link on my belt. Sounds like a plan ??? Marty

I get my Magnet's free. If you want some strong magnets for your scoop. Tear apart an old microwave that you might find on the curb. Try to discharge the Capacitor. The magnet will probaly be in a Square Box that is sealed real good..Then-put the magnet in a small zip lock bag and use about 4 tie strap to hold it in place. Should last about a year with heavy digging. Also great to throw the fishing hooks on the magnet that you might get from retrieving fishing weights-goldnugget-Charlotte,N.C.
