Rare Earth Magnets and Scoop Handle Length

EasySwing

New member
I finally got my scoop from a Michigan Detector Store. It is the s/s scoop with 1/4" mesh, 9.5" wide fitted for a wooden handle. I have two questions.

1.) Want to add a Rare Earth Magnet to back of the scoop. I saw someone have a plastic coated (yellow colored) magnet in a picture. Would like to find a site where I could get a plastic coated magnet for the scoop. Will be hunting all saltwater. What size? From where? Is one enough?

2.) How long should I make the handle for the scoop. I bought a 60" wheelbarrow handle. Have 2 of them. I am 6'1" with long arms. Is over 48" overall better? Is longer length better?

Aquaman may know the answers to both questions. Anyone chime in !! Thanks,
Marty

Go to a large hardware store, find out what they carry for magnets and get creative on how to attach them. I tried plastic snap ties, and they didn't last long. I then attached 2 of them in my scoop, and have had no problems. Below is what I used. I remove the round magnet from the their housing and attached them to my scoop with washers, nuts & bolts. If you have the same scoop I have, which uses the wheelbarrow, I kept their original size. My buddy removed about 18 inches plus he put them in a lathe to round them out. His came out great. Good luck!

Thanks John,

I was wondering if the 60" length is a bit long. I wish I had access to a lathe. I would take a nice cut on them to smooth them out, but for now a sander will do.
If the length is too long I can always cut them down. Do you use any preservative on the wood at all? Marty

I did put on a coat of varnish or shellac on the handle, but it has long dried off. I'll probably put on another coat this winter.

Try several coats of polyurethane-U won't wear that off
