Rare American Coin Found

Well, it's pretty rare to me. I found a 2000 $1 Sac. And a hotwheel. It was a quick hunt at the park. 9 coins for $1.83.

It's strange that virtually all SACS found are 2000's. I have close to 40 and they are all that year Go figure.

Sac dollars were only released into circulation in 2000 and 2001 and then a few in 2006. They are used as bridge tokens and public transportation tokens in a lot of cities in the northeast. I work in a club and a few of the patrons who commute from NYC leave them for me as tips. I have gotten a few of wide rim 1979 SBA dollars in this way. This is jar 2. Jar 1 is one of those Crown Royal bags and has 600 bucks in it. Getting a lot of presidential dollar coins lately. My plans for them are someday to drive coast to coast spending only dollar coins. I'll get these things in circulation somehow. Someday there will be folksongs sung about the guy who popularized the dollar coin (I'm thinking Johnny Appleseed.) You'll all owe me big time

Chris

Think about the half dollar which for years was used almost exclusively by casinos. As casinos went coin-less fewer and fewer will minted and I don't think anything after 2001 has been placed in circulation. Maybe a few in 2005, I don't recall exactly. Luckily they are popular with collectors and hopefully they won't disappear.

I have found 14 of them. All 2000.............

Yeah what happened to the other six years? There's a helluva lot of coins out there waiting to be dropped. The Mint shucked out about a billion of them.

The first mintage of SACS was 600 million. They didn'y fly so the Mintspent 40 million on an ad campaign to coerce the public into spending them, then they minted another 400 million or so and gave up.

BAck when I lived and worked in Vegas in the late fifties and early sixties the silver dollar was the coin of the realm and was used for everything everywhere. Anytime you broke a bill anywhere you got silver dollars in change. Wish I had saved a few. Everybody had a pocketful of them all the time.
