Hi all, from way down under.I have had my xterra for 5 weeks and amazed at the results, lots of junk jewellery and also some good, along with around $150 in change.I am still learning but enjoying each trip out more and more will post pics once I learn how to, are there any other kiwis out there.......

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good information on here , look forward to seeing your finds.

Hi kiwi,I am an ex Aucklander now living at the mount,I have just been m/ding the local beaches, but will branch out into some of the old local battles sites soon.Where in Auckland are you.......

Hi Kiwi Jim,
I'm south side in Papakura, how is the M/D going down there, any interesting finds ?

Hi kiwi,I have just been given permission to hunt a local park which goes back around 100yrs and the terrain is mostly still the same,I found around $9 in current money and 3 pennys and two halfpennys the oldest 1924 also 2 florins, one 1949 the other 1950.But it is a vast area and will keep me going for a day or 3, as I am still in the learning mode. There is only one or two other retired guys around here and they mostly do the beaches early in the morning.I used to live in Auckland during the building boom and was mad keen on old bottles I sure would have liked an xterra then as we were mind set on only bottles and must have bypassed heaps of coins and tokens etc.Is there a club up there, if so do they have club trips etc.We are off to Otago next month and will try my luck on gold, have you tried? how long have you been detecting........cheers

Hello fellow Kiwi's, I live in North Otago and am just learning to use my 705 too, my immediate area is loaded with junk! (bottle tops and can tags)

Sorting through it is interesting at least!

I don't like using my detector when holiday makers are around, it makes me feel enormously obvious but I'm adjusting slowly!

Hi Kiwi-Jim & Auldrider, You realize that I'm green with envy, I would love to get down south & try my luck on the old gold fields and the many old house sites down there especially on the ' coast.
It sound like you have a really good spot with your finds of the old coins & especially finding $150 in change, your will have recouped the cost of the detector very soon if you keep that up.
Think he might need a hand Auldrider ??
I have had my XT50 for about 3 years now, haven't quite paid for it with finds but working on it  , last year found just over $100 just about paid for my 6x10 coil that I bought when I went to Adelaide (no didn't take the detector with me)
I have been using a detector for about 10 years now, borrowed a Minelab Soveriegn off a friend, took him 7 years to get it back in the end had to go & buy my own, have found a few old Aussy pennies some old pre decimal coins, a lot of old decimal coins, toy cars, some rings at the beach (nothing valuable)
All good fun & gets me out and about for a bit of fresh air

Yeah I know what you mean about using your detector when there is an audience, especially at the beach with one eye on the detector and the other on young ladies with skimpy bikinis (but I woundn't do anything like that).Lots of tear tabs and silver foil here to,but I have learnt not to ignore them as they register very similiar as a $1 or $2 coin...

True!

Because I don't know too much about detecting yet I dig everything up, either to confirm or deny whatever the target is, even if I have guessed what it might be!

The other reason I do that is, it is cleaning up my back yard so to speak!

My daughter lost a little gold crucifix some years ago in her pony paddock and I would love to find it for her unfortunately it seems to have been a dump sometime and it drives my 705 ballistic.

I know I will find it eventually if I can get the detector over it because I have found all sorts of tiny metallic things so far but it is a very large area! (Great learning field)

I have a 6 inch DD 18.5 HF coil now and while it narrows things down a bit it seems to be able to find all the same junk only a bit deeper,!

Fortunately for me I still enjoy digging up the junk, so it seems like I will be happy for a long time yet. :bouncy:
