:ranting: Bottlecaps

Hey guys, I've been digging ALOT of bottlecaps recently in the 12 37 and 12 43 range and coming in loud and crisp . I have tried ferrous coin, high trash, discrimination, no discrimination, target trace, target pinpoint to no avail. Just today I dug 7 of them. So I did a test with one of them and a quarter.
As I laid them on the ground about 12 inches apart, I swung my coil from all directions. Funny thing was, both targets looked the same.
Even with target trace, the bottlecap was a solid circle with bullseye in the middle. I even tried earthmansurfer's advice and tried his theory. Failed.

Any insight would be helpful

I found the older ones hit 1:30 or in the iron range, the new ones seemed to hit like a dime or quarter, especially if they are flipped upside down. I dont recall digging very many though with the Etrac or the two hunts with the CTX. My VLF detecor used to love them at VDI of 85. I had to dig them all day. Drove me nuts so I feel for you. I still get fooled by pop cans, they sound great. I have learned that If I airtest over that great signal I can raise it up to over a foot and it is still a great signal that equals pop can to me....I wonder how many silver coin buckets I have passed up.

Perhaps your bottle caps are of a different composition?

I got in on video and others had mentioned it as well regarding how to get them out, so I suspect something is different than yours. Could be iron ground mineralization or the like. My ground is somewhat iron mineralized, not bad. If your ground is really bad try running ground coin and seeing what happens.

Did you ever use an E-Trac and if so, did it hit on them as well? (Mine didn't appear to hit as hard as the CTX)

Im watching this bottle cap finding, that is one thing I love with the etrac not digging many bottle caps. My other detector loves them and i hate digging them, being in wisconsin people drink lots of beer here and most sites have tons of caps:beers:

The only bottle caps I dig with the CTX are the occasional aluminum ones

Oh no D has a CTX. Im cheap D..... im watching right now. Surely its as easy to ID a bottle cap as it is with an ET or SE? Now i have found Corona bottle caps seem to have maybe a mix or copper that makes them different on the beach. Lets see some of those nice silver you dig up D.

They tend to "splatter" with multiple ID points all over the screen. I would watch that and not the ID number.

Are we talking about steel bottle caps and not aluminum screw caps? I sure hope not as that could be a pain in the a**. I don't see why as all the other Minelab detectors are so good at it.

After well over 40 hours in parks I have yet to dig a steel crown cap other than a couple in same plug with a coin.Mostly running in coins mode or lite modification there of. I have found that the CTX runs much better in trash with at least some disc just like the E-Trac:thumbup:

I have found my share as well, still learning the machine and will watch closer on my screen. I think we should post the ones that are fooling us and lets figure out a way to reduce them.

Joe

Yea they are the steel variety, lots of Pepsi. I did watch the screen to see if they would splatter. Nope,
crystal clear like a coin. More testing will be done. Hopefully I or the other guy's will come up with
an answer.

From my testing above ground as well as some freshly buried targets I have noticed the following in my somewhat iron mineralized ground:

1st and most importantly - I am finding without a doubt that the CTX performs better WITH DISCRIMINATION - when around iron. I know this is counter to using an open combine mode which seems to be all the rage. But every test I have done (including on targets I came across in the field) pointed to the same thing - disc lowered the falsing. Now, I know I am mostly talking about testing but it was true with a few targets as well. I'm early in getting to know the CTX, but just want to put this out there - no harm intended!

2nd - I don't know why but with the same exact settings 50 CO mode did better than Combine mode in all my iron tests, above and below ground, but they were just tests Need to check in ground targets. The best settings I have found regarding coins near iron has been with recovery fast on and ferrous coin selected. You can observe this below:

Albert,

Interesting...I was out on a trashy beach yesterday and was using combined mode with open screen otherwise the same settings I will have to switch back to 50 co mode and run some discriminatation. I had to work extra hard to get a clean signal and when I did an ultra slow swing speed with minimal coil wiggle produced the targets I found.

Thanks for the videos and the update!

Joe

Thanx Al. Will give 50 a shot with the disc and see if that helps.

I'm from wisconsin as well and have been finding lots of deep white caps, I'm not sure what they are from, but I do not remember digging this many with the e-trac. Usually coming up as a dime.

Sometimes you have to dig them....no biggy. Its fun to dig isnt it??
