Ran the Omega in All Metal mode for a while

I only spent about an hour, but was pleasantly surprised as to what I could identify by ear and the readout jointly. Only found a couple coins, but hadnt really expected much because I had been over the same area two or three times recently. I'd be interested to hear from anyone who also uses the Omega in all metal mode, and which which tone pattern is used (A1 to A4). I spent most of the time in A2. Thanks, and a Happy Christmas to all.

I seldom use all metal, but also am re-hunting some spots that I have hit hard numerous times with different coils and detectors and all metal is about all that is left to try. We shall see. Hh jim tn

I have used all metal on the Omega to further investigate a target found in discrimination. That has been interesting. For example when I get a so so hit, I switch to AM and then look for a denser hit coupled with a higher VDI. I haven't done it enough to reach a conclusion, outside of it's another nice perspective on a target. I do the same thing by hunting in D2 mode and then checking the target in D4 mode (listening for a clear beep - or if it's in iron the beep seems to be slightly muffled.)

You mentioned "I could identify by ear and the readout jointly" and that is the caveat for me. I don't enjoy looking at the VDI so much and I guess my ears are not good enough to just listen to the all metal sound alone. I mean do people actually do that or does one need to look at the VDI a bit too? (If there was a forearm mounted display it might not be so bad I guess).

Earthmansurfer, I've detected with another brand of machine that has no VDI, in all metal, but in that machine there is no option as to mode (tones). With the Omega I was relying on the audio to get my attention (after a short time), and then I would check the display. I would say that most times my guess was in the ballpark, and sometimes spot on. I take your point though, and yes, some people do hunt in all metal mode, dsicriminating only with their ears and their experience with their detector. Sounds crazy, when you have disc. available, but it works. Thanks for your reply.

Jim, let us know how you get on when you start re-doing your areas in all metal. HH

Thanks for the reply.

What I was getting at was, what subtleties or things do you listen for in the AM mode? In d4 mode, I listen for a clear beep (unless in iron). In d2 I am really just sizing the target, looking for a "dense" hit and then using the VDI.

I had a Nautilus an really enjoyed the dual mode system (hope that could be an option on future detectors in general). That AM sound had a lot to it, but it was still the beep that caught me. I guess I just need to train my ears more, it takes years...

I kept in A2 mainly, and one of the things I listed for was the sharpness and evenness of the tones.....I also found it easier to pinpoint without pressing the pinpoint button than I do in disc mode, and it was easier (for me) to identify the size of the target. As I haven't used it much in all metal, I feel I still have a lot to find out about the Omega. Hope this helps a bit, but it's diofficult for me to describe the subtleties without the detector and the target to demonstrate with.

It would be nice if the Omega had both tone ID & VDI (numerical readout) in am (like the Xterra 70/705 does).---Maybe incorporate it in the "next generation" Omega?----------Del

Yes Del, that would be great...I took mine out for a very short while today and used in All Metal, in a park that I have been hitting in the last couple weeks. Found coins I did not really expect to find and actually found it easy to identify targets in A2. The more I use the am mode, the more I like it. The audio combine with the visual readout works great for me. Much more noise, as there is a load of iron in this park, and some emi as well, so I keep the sensitivity to mid 60s - mid 70s. Trouble is, I can only use it when the ground is soft, otherwise I just wont be able to dig deep enough:lol: Have a Merry Christmas and the best of health in the New Year.
