Rain Soaked Ground

Will rain soaked grass alter depth reading? I was at a park where in the low lying areas were filled with water. Alot of my depth readings were 8 inches but the targets were shallower.

What coil are you using, smaller coils will always show deeper than the targets are. The stock was always fairly close on coins, and the big ex coil will show a little deeper, Which works good when coin shooting, i know 99% of the time if it shows a coin 6 inches down, if I dig down six inches and dont have the coin, it aint a coin. Note I did say most of the time, I usually don't look at the depth reading very much, Just dig, you'll find it if its beepin. Another thought when in the grass how far is your coil off the ground ??

I was using the new 14" DD coil. When I swing the coil I just skim the top of the grass.
Hope this helps

I have noticed with about all of the coil that 90% of the time the targets will be shallower than what the read. Also when the ground is damp the moisture will amplify a coin magnetic strength, also refered to as a "halo" affect. Which may make the machine think the targets is bigger than it actually is therefore reading as a deeper target. As i mentioned earlier the smaller coil are the worst for this. The stock coil was about the best as far as depth readings . but as long as your finding the targets i wouldn't concern myself so much with the depth readings, It pretty normal for them to be off, some coils more than others and ground conditions also affect the readings too. The small coil I use will show a one inch dime at 3-4 inches down, If the depth is 0 most of the time it is a large trash item.
