Railroad Depot find.........

New member
Hunted an old railroad depot this weekend. There is no evidence of this place left and if you didn't know the history of this town you wouldn't know it's location. Nature has reclaimed the spot with trees and brush, no foundations, no old ties or track, etc. HARD to swing a coil here....blah blah. I'm a coinshooter and NOT a relic guy and give most of that stuff away but I found thiis button at the old depot and thought "that's kinda cool". Then I proceeded to hunt and thought about what I'd just found and was thinking about how cool it was to be hunting an old RR Depot and finding a button off the conductors cap! What were the chances of that? I have a new respect for relics and treasure this one. No silver for me this weekend and no coins were found at the Depot. I did manage this Indian and was pleased as it's the first Indian for me in quite awhile........ Pics are 2 days of hunting

Love that conductor button!

Was it a difficult area to hunt because of the growth or the metal that I imagine a railroad depot would be full of ?

The conductor button is a great find and so is the Indian Head Penny. It's in really good shape. There's more neat stuff at that location to find.

Nice button!

very good finds, the Indian is in nice condition and the pennys, if you find a rare penny it should be in good shape, I know the ones I have found in the farm field are toast

Thanks guys....!!!!!

YES! on both junk and overgrowth. I also encountered rock that's new to me, it's white/gray with black specs and looks like granite? Rocks the size of small potatoes were setting my machine off? Never seen the stuff before and suspect it may have been roadbed for the tracks that was hauled in from parts unknown maybe....???? Tab is right on the $ though as there is coin there somewhere but a guy will have to be patient and work it as best he can? They will come slow but the odds of Barber and possibly some seated stuff should be fairly high? I did some more research and now know how things were situated back in the day so my next visit may increase my chances now that I know how things sat way back when. Also have a bud that lives there and remembers the area from his childhood. Most likely won't be back there till next summer......

PS.... Got another yard to do on Fri. Place looks to be 1910-20ish? Also may have a homestead 1 mile down rd. from my house but the guy wants me to wait for some strange reason. I'll hit him this weekend and ask when I can get started but I'm not gonna get too excited until I get the go-ahead. The homestead was his mom's place, he grew up there, she died recently. Early 1900's and might be a good one?

Super hunt! Great collection of coins there. Must have been fun!

What detector did you use and did you have to turn the sensitivity down because of the hot rocks? Im asking because there is an old depot in my town.

I use an old Golden Sabre II and normally run high disc and use the notch feature. Had the sensitivty down some. The notch REALLY helps me in trash (I'm a copper/silver coinshooter) and I believe helps make places like these somewhat tolerable even though the machine was really talking and it takes it's toll on your head after awhile....lol

I say check out your depot,,,,,do your research, find old pics and see how things sat back when? I'm gonna go back as I KNOW there's some coins scattered around and I'll find a couple if I'm persistant and patient. If nothing else, the hard hunting has probably kept others down to a minimum?
