Radio Shack Land Star

Gotta chance to get this detector. I think it's the same detector as the BH Landstar, just the radio shack version. The guy says it's in perfect condition, barely a scratch on the coil, I can get it for around $100, what do you think?

The price is right if it works properly. Open the battery door and check the leads for signs of corrosion. Put in fresh batteries and test drive it on known targets that you have buried at different depths. If it targets properly and you still don't buy it, call me and I will be right over! :super:

You just can't go wrong for $100 as long as it works PROPERLY. I almost bid on one on eBay that offered the regular coil plus small and large. It was well under a $100 when I put in my proxy bid but it sold for $125, a hell of a good deal but I really didn't need the extra coil, it was just an impulse buy. I would have kept the 2 coils and resold the detector and still got my money back. I should control myself!

Yep, I'll join in with everyone on that one. I bought a Land Star about 1 1/2 mos ago for $250 or so thru Amazon.com. It came with a case, a digging tool & an equipment/find belt pouch, but you can get that stuff on your own. $100 is a good deal if that's the model you want. Good luck!

I swing a Land Star and enjoying every swing!
For you and every one reading this that owns a Land Star and has access to beaches whether regularly or during vacations: are you able to ground balance it on the wet sand, black or otherwise? If yes, where do you set the SENSITIVITY and GROUND BALANCE? If you can't GB it, do you then change to DISC and hunt "normally"? If you want to add how deep you find anything it'll be appreciated. Also mention any other problems and/or benefits.

I have never been unable to ground balance it yet. The GB knob is usually in the 2:30 to 3:00 position when done. I do then switch to Disc. mode set the disc button around 9:00 to no more than 10:00. I run the sensitivity as high as I can without too much falseing. The soil here most be gentle because it's normally cranked wide open. With the sensitivity that high when you go to pinpoint, if it's a piece of can slaw or foil with any mass to it you can normally tell because it will start to overload unit. Kind of know its junk before you dig. Recommend dig everything until you start to know the unit, I will dig everything when feeling ambitious just so the sight is cleaner for the next pass. Heck that was how I found my first 4 rings.(none of any value but still rings). But if your in a sensitive area where you want to keep the digging to a minimum, don't worry you will be able to tell the difference between a good hit or a questionable one in no time. Haven't got it on wet sand yet, not much of that here.

I have had that same machine for 5 years now and never had any problems with it at all, great detector!!! Kevin

I turn one down back in March for about $70. It's the same as the landstar, You can get the manual from R/S. Happy Hunting.

Hi, I purchased this exact unit about 2 years ago, and have been very happy with it.
It is a model that can help you build skills in ground balance and still has manual adjustments available for the user.
I wanted to have something that I could get educated with, and this turned out to a nice model that would not break the bank.
I taught my daughter how to use this and she caught on pretty quick, I bought her the same unit.
Here is a pic from our finds the first day we went out together.
We are hooked!
:)

Yep, that's the Land Star alright. And a great detector it is. too.
And a great buy! SPEND THE MONEY!! You'll be glad you did.
Mine has been a real jewel, dependable and accurate meter ID & 3 ID
tones, too! Plus the manual GB no-motion all metal mode gives
easy pinpointing and access to many sites with high minerals.
The 4" coil is great for cherry picking trashy sites, the 8" for
a wider range and the 10" for even wider and those deeper beepers!
Have fun!:clapping:
