I was going to post this in the "Cheap Headphones" thread that appeared a while back but darn if I can find that thread using Search? Anyway, I was up at Radio Shack yesterday and decided to check out their headphones while I was there. If doing this note that they have headphones in at least 3 or 4 sections of the store. One section is I think for computer USB ports, another for "Headsets" (meaning headphones with a mike), but some genious also put regular headphones and "full sized" into two different parts of the store...While I saw just as big of headphones in the "regular" section as I did the "full sized" section, and have no idea why they've put them 30 feet from each other in the first place. That's like putting size 38 and 40 pants at Walmart at opposite sides of the store.
Anyway, I found a grey pair that had 32 ohms (matching exactly what the GT calls for) and also had left/right volume controls for like $29 or cheaper (can't remember). Took them out for a test spin for about half an hour and the audio sucked. I turned the GT volume all the way up and then adjusted it in the left/right controls on the headphones. Wierd thing was one control would control the other and vise versa. Get the left where you wanted it and the right wouldn't get loud enough and so on. The audio was also very washed out or muffled to me compared to the $20 Sony Studio headphones from Walmart. Now I'm getting worried that the Walmart jobs might go away some day and I'll have a long search for rich/good audio, so I might pick up a few back up pairs.
Also, I picked up a volume control at Walmart for the Sonys to see if I liked it so I wouldn't have to stuff foam in the ear muffs (no stock volume control), or could at least crank up the volume on the GT to full blast (have to keep it all the way down with them). Anyway, did not care one bit for how the audio sounded once I cranked up the volume on the GT and then adjusted it on the white inline volume control ($10) from Radio Shack. Sounded just as washed out and as muffled as the headphones I had picked up from there. Wonder why, since I would guess the volume control would just bit a variable resistor of some sort. I'll stick with the foam in the ear muffs and the volume control on the GT all the way down until I find something that is as good or better.
