Radio Shack BH 2 Knob er

Hello Fellow MDers

Anyone ever use the Radio Shack ( Bounty Hunter ) kids detector sold back in the 1980's from RS. Here I paid over $49.95 for this detector and the rod looks like the cheap aluminum rod used on the New BH Junior. Shaft when extended was just long enough that you would need to bend over slightly as a adult to use it. If I remember right this detector only had 2 knobs. this was a "BFO" ( Beat Frequency Oscillator ) detector, and it had a meter on it. You could set the one know enough to get the meter to swing forward on good signals and swing backwards for iron type objects. It was setting for ferrous and non -ferrous metals. This detector did not go that deep but I found several Silver coins down to 4" or so in some soil conditions. I was surprised how much this little detector picked up in treasures. I really liked the Features the BFO produced just about anything junky would swing the meter backward so you knew not to dig it while the good targets always swung upward on the meter. I wish they had a deeper better quality of these type today, something like any New type body style like the Discovery 2200/ 3300 series, but with the same meter showing up scale for positive coin type objects and reverse scale for Iron type objects, even some times these BFO type were more better for looking for some types of targets. How about it 1st Texas what about a New version of this Golden Oldie goodie?

Anyone else have good results with this type of BFO detector, does anyone remember the Model number ?

The BFO unit was about $15. What you're describing is their primitive cheapo VLF-TR unit. I dissected one in the early 80's.

When it comes to the question of resurrecting oldies: bringing into production stuff that's actually competitive nowadays is a lot of hard work, we don't have time to dabble in retros which would never sell enough units to pay for the engineering cost, much less the manufacturing cost. Forum classifieds and eBay beat us at that game with used units, units that are the real thing.

Thanks for answering Dave, I can see what you are talking about taking 3 steps backward when we are all trying to move forward. Sometimes we get caught up in the past and can't clearly see what the downsides are trying to resurrect the old dinosaurs as it were. I never gave much thought to the question about retrofitting and so on. Yes,I can imagine there might not be so great of sales in Old Technology, I guess it's time to move forward, I'm sure your group is doing the best it can to be on the edge of the latest designs and technical advancements with your and John G's help we will see improvements even if it's just by small steps at a time. I'm happy to say that I use and sell Fisher/Technetics/ Bounty Hunter equipment and will still do so in the future. Thanks for your input on this forum, and we wish you the best for any New advancements at Fisher Labs.:bounty::thumbup:
