RACER2 TONE BREAK & IRON AUDIO

Now that the Racer2's been out for a while and folks have had an opportunity to use it and test out the various settings, I'm curious to hear how folks are using the tone break and iron audio settings and how it's working for them?

I set mine up when I first got it in 3-tone, gain as high as I can run it (typically 9:geek:. tone break at 10 and 65 (65 to move old coins into the high tone window) and my iron audio is at 2. This seems to work well, but I've seen various comments whereas folks are having success with other settings hunting in iron infested sites, and am curious what people are having good luck with?

I always try to incorporate nickels into my tone breaks. So I set the mid tone for them. High tone I set to include Indians on up. I'm a coin hunter and I set my detector to give me the most info it can for them. With the Racer 2 I do pay attention to good solid hits no matter what tone. A good solid hit from various directions and stable numbers usually indicates round targets. A great majority of the time it's a pull tab, but you never know. Iron audio I set site specific. I usually try to listen to it all until my brain has had enough and then I turn it down. The ability to use Iron audio sure makes you miss it when you go back to a detector that doesn't have it. It really comes in handy trying to find what I call the busy section of a site. That place where the nails and iron are likely to mask targets. That's where I want to be with the Racer 2.

only on the third set of batteries and I hunt urban big city parks/schools (sigh...its the way it is)...
but here's what I've 'vectored' to; 0 disc (fantastic that this works!, ie I can now hear what the falses are/were), 2 tone only since I'm looking for gold through big silver (coins, rings) (multi-tone is a nuisance for me), I learned that good results/depth are solid with the gain lowered, ie mid 70's max, iron audio down low to quiet things, and make the 0 disc very tolerable, 20 tone break so I can hear foil just in case I want to try for smaller gold. very non-chatty and a pleasure/fun to use now with these settings...and I have picked out a few nice items/coins (all my 'spots' are 'hunted out' with some potential as I (and others) heavily 'Minelab'ed' them years ago).

btw, I'm really liking the R2, compliments my G2+ with extra depth and it's hot on coin size targets (clad) also....I'm now thinking that I won't really need an Impact, ie just won't be able to justify the cost/hastle of switching...and 14khz freq is a great compromize. I won't need the higher freq since I've got my 19khz G2+ and the lower freq I think just won't pan out (in my areas)....

a couple downers are depth indication is crap, all I see is 2 or 3...regardless of how deep the target is....
and the battery indication shows full for a long time, then as soon as it drops be looking for the battery 'low' notice not too long afterwards. Does seem to get good battery life though (I can't quantify it though)...

both my G2+ and Racer 2 have it and I'll never buy a detector in the future that doesn't have that feature....it's a no-brainer....

Thanks goodmore and horikindaguy. Always interesting to compare notes to see what's working for you guys, and get new ideas to try out in the field.

BTW The battery going from full to null is a PITA. I hiked into a site and checked the R2 battery strength before leaving and it said the battery was full. I had switched my finds pouch, and forgot my extra set of batteries was in the other finds pouch. I got to my site, started detecting and about 30-45 minutes into the hunt all of a sudden I lost audio, looked at the display and saw that my battery was dead

That's typical of rechargables - they hold a high level of voltage up until they are ready to die, then they go just like that.

Might need to bring along extras (couldn't hurt!)

Ugh. You guys make me want to buy a racer 2... :surrender:
