Racer 2 and rusty bottle caps.

Hunting a Park yesterday and dug several old rusty bottle caps. Sounded and ID was in coin range . Reading high 70s to low 80s. Anyone know how to tell the difference.

Try lifting your coil off the ground a few inches. Usually with those rusty steel bottlecaps, the ID will jump around instead of staying locked on. Then, if you're like me, you'll dig it anyway, just to make sure.

I was just watching a video about that by Keith Southern.... and I think I learned something. He put a Dime down, and a rusty bottle cap. While they both had a close VDI number, when you listened to both signals right after the other, you could tell the difference. He did it many times, and even without looking, I could tell every time, which one he was over. In 3 tone, the dime was very clear and clean, but the bottle cap was, while loud, just a light touch of a mid tone, even directly over it. It was more noticeable on the heel and toe, and also when lifting away... In two tone, it was harder, quite a bit harder....but still noticeable if you were paying attention, but yeah, I'd probably dig it anyway too, LOL... Very informative Video.....

I've seen that video, and it's right on, as Southern usually is. But I also keep in mind that it's based on knowing there's a dime and a bottle cap under the coil. In real life it's an unknown--maybe it's a dime close to a bottle cap or piece of foil, a deep quarter overlapped by a shallow pull tab, etc. etc. So if I'm getting a high tone, I will usually dig it unless it's a shallow bad number or it's in a place where I need to be selective about digging holes.

The problem for me is if it's that close to a coin , I have dig it. And I ended up with many rusty bottle caps. Guess I'm thinking it could be a coin next to trash. And the bottles caps were at the 6-8" deep level. So guess I'm just hoping this could be a old coin. Anyway dug many rusty bottle caps with hopes it would be a old coin. When the ID is so close , I just want to see what it is. Just wish it was a little easier to tell the difference.

I agree with you both....Yes, that video is like in the perfect world, LOL. I dig lots of bottle caps too. It's like you say, you never know, and they usually aren't that deep. I actually find more Screw caps, then bottle caps.. It's always a bit disappointing, but at least they aren't at the bottom of a 9" hole! Do you guys find that Bottle caps are usually more shallow then Screw caps. Most of my Bottle caps, I find at about 2 inches and Screw caps, I usually find at about 4" or more..I guess it's just the nature of the hunt... the Great Unknown, LOL

I've found some pretty deep rusty bottle caps--also those large old pulltabs that rust. But yeah, those screw caps... high tone and 70s on the VDI. :angry: What bugs me most is getting excited at a deep signal and it turns out to be a squashed beer can at 9".

LOL, I hear ya about the squashed beer cans... I get so excited with a good signal, my imagination runs wild, and I just skip all the things I should do, to avoid digging it. Even after 31 years of doing this, every hole is still a "This could be a ????"
It never gets old, unless it turns out to be a day of Pull tabs, square tabs, and screw caps. Those days, even a Zinc, looks good, LOL
