Raccoon Lake Grand Finale

Here is the best I can do, Thanks for all who responded
I put the letters on my business letter head and rolled the dice.

Dept Of Natural Resources Oct 28, 2006
402 W. Washington Ave
Indianapolis, IN 46204
Mr. Kyle Hupfer
DNR Director
On Oct 26, 2006, I visited Cecil M. Harden Lake at the Raccoon State Park near Rockville, Indiana and inquire about the possibility of using my metal detector in the soon to be nearly drained lake basin. The new park property manager happened to be at lunch however, the office clerk explained to me that the beach area was hunted very thoroughly but she would have the superintendent call me with more info. Happily, Mr. Mike Clingermen promptly called with the answer, sadly he told me the only place metal detecting was allowed was the beach area, when queried he replied,

All sounds too logical and filled with common sense. It'll never fly.

Maybe with some miracle, someone in a position to give it a thumbs-up will have the nads to "take a chance" and do everyone a favor.

Great letter, by the way.

What you should have done was find out what elected law makers were on the Board of the DNR.The DNR people are appointed and are not law makers.Ask the elected officials to state why it is prohibited. Also please, never tell them to charge a fee.It never goes away.Maybe that is OK with you,but the majority of detectorist don't want it.The only thing the DNR should have to do with it is to have house keeping rules on covering up the holes. The County I live in has permits which are FREE and only have general rules for covering the holes and a couple of sensible off limit places. The Governor probably doesn't know what you are talking about. You have to contact the Department of Parks and Recreation and get a copy of the Laws that are on the books.Your State Legislator is the easiest route to take on that..........They should have a office in your district and their staff will do the leg work for you.

Gee I was wondering what I should have done:)
Does the governor of Indiana qualify as an elected official?

I wonder how the majority of detectorist you speak of like not hunting the lake now? Those that do not want to pay the fee can hunt elsewhere like WE are all doing NOW. :) Or they can write their own letters :)

If the governor reads my letter, I think he will get it, You got it didn't you Jim? :) By the way this is a state park not a county park.

I think I will turn that job over to you Jim, my letters have already been mailed :)
Thanks for the response.
