R2 Goes "bonkers"

W

Finally got out today with the new R2. Tried different modes and different settings and all seemed well. That is, until I tried "DEEP" mode. The machine went;, literally, bonkers. The sound was a rapid 120-130 "bonks" per minute. Yes, it sounded like bonk, bonk, bonk, etc. The numbers were a rapid series between 2 and 10 almost keeping up with the "bonk". Trigger forward, trigger back, various settings, including low to high gain, multiple ground balances- nothing worked. I have mild soil and the field I was in had very few targets, mostly iron. II must be doing something wrong. Any ideas? Help is really appreciated. I've read the manual 5 times but I can't find anything like this in the manual. I've owned 46 detectors in 46 years and this machine whipped me! Again, thanks for any help from you guys and gals.

sounds like it needs replacing , that doesn't sound normal if other modes are working fine in the same place?

I'd say either there's something wrong with the machine or there was some funky EMI that only affected the DEEP mode.

CC, thanks for the follow-up. I'm going back to the field and work myself slowly away from the power lines. (very high voltage). I was approx. 100 yds . away the first time. Will also try the small coil which I didn't have with me. You are right. It seems strange that the power lines could affect the DEEP mode but not the others. Electrons are strange entities. I just don't trust them. Hope I don't have to send the machine back.

"Sounds about the right reaction from too high a Gain and too many trash targets and EMI.

You did mention 'power lines'?

DEEP is NOT meant to be a general coin shooting mode. It's a carry-over from earlier Models they had developed: they obviously thought it would be a good feature to have in a [ coin shooter ]

You have to do a GB
You have to reduce Gain to where it stops 'pulsing'
You have to work slowly
You should keep the coil a few inches off the surface as touching the ground or banging into obstacles will upset it
You could use it at a farmstead to look for one of those 'mythical' mason jars crammed full of silvers!!!
You can use it to check "iffy" signals...
You might find the small 5.5" coil handles it better?

Don't expect miracles with it."

"The sound was a rapid 120-130 "bonks" per minute."

If you are getting this WITHOUT moving the coil then it's either a loose connection(which it isn't because it only affected deep mode), or, it is EMI.

EMI, or electro-magnetic interference, is cause by other electronic devices interacting with your detector. Cell phones, power lines, cameras, and just about anything that uses electricity and is running can cause it.

Step one: turn off any electronic devices you have.

Step two: Use the frequency shift on the Racer 2 to find a better channel with less interference.

Step three: Turn down the gain until it stabilizes.

and if that doesn't work...

Step four: Go to an area that is less urban.

Hello.
Have you tried the machine in a different location?

Thanks for the possible solutions for the rapid "bonks". As mentioned I tried various settings on just about every possible combination including running the gain down to 40. I will try the freq. shift. Don't know why I didn't think of it. I'm a relic hunter with about 2300 acres of farm land surrounding me but there are high voltage lines running through the middle. My other machines don't have this problem (Eurotek Pro, T2, F-19, AT Pro and a few others). Maybe the R2 is just very sensitive. This may be an attribute but I guess I will out. Again thanks for the response.

Tried freq. shift and no help. Got about 250-300 yds. away and the pulsing quit. Still can't figure why it pulses in DEEP but not other modes.

guess its like detecting a beach with a PI machine see the storm out at see the lightning strikes are so far out there's no sound with them to the normal ear but can still hear them through the detector.

maybe its just the power lines pulsing through the detector , I would be interesting to know if it has happened to anyone else??

thanks

AJ
