Went digging today - got only about 25 coins and a Sacky. But I did get this gold looking ear ring.

On looking it over I didn't see any stamps at all. But then I saw something that was so small it looked like scratches on the post that goes through the ear. But looking with my magnifier I saw numbers and letters. Going to my higher magnifier I saw ZZ@565 or 585. This is European stamping for 14 K. I shot the pic through the magnifier. My 19th gold for the year.
Also, the Sacky dollar coin is my 6 th one this year. People must be using them finally as in all my previous years I haven't dug more than 2 or 3 in any year.
So check those gold looking items more closely !! Maybe put it on your calendar to check all the "junk" gold looking things you have ion the old junk box this winter when the s*%w flies. 96 degrees here today - cooling off tho.

I didn't throw a gold away, but I did find a junk earring at the beach. One night after reading one of your posts about markings, I looked at it again. Very similar to yours, I found the tiniest ".925" on the post. It really did look like a scratch :)

Great picture by the way!

Steve,

I learned my lesson about a year ago. I sell a lot of gold on ebay that I buy at yard sales. Many many times I've bought 10k 14k and 18k that was marked with the European markings and no one knew what it was. By the way, you are correct that .585 is 14k. For future reference, 8k (German gold) is .333, 10k is .417 and 18k is .750. Also, I didn't know what "plumb" gold was either. I thought that meant plated or something of the sort. Actually, Plumb gold means that the gold content is guaranteed at a minimum of the karat stamp whether it is 10k 14k etc... The reason that stamp is used is because of some jewelry makers who do not assay their gold content properly. If you buy a marked 10k gold ring, it sometimes could actually be slightly under or over 10k. Just a little further education on gold.

Now, since I've revealed all my secrets, stay away from my yard sales!!!!!!!

Happy Hunting!
