QXT settings

Just got a QXT in today. Anyone care to share their settings? I am especially interested in threshold, and frequency. If I turn the threshold all the way up I still don't hear anything in disc. mode. Is this abnormal? Seems to me it is. Everything seems stable with frequency in factory default but is there anything to be gained by changing it. I read an something that said that the correct freq. setting was important when it comes to maximizing performance. If the machine is stable, is there any need to change it? Thanks for any input.

Kurt, the QXT is a silent search detector in the disc. mode. The freq. should be left at the default setting unless your getting some cross talk with another detector close to you. If you have decent ground and don't have problems with hotrocks turn noise reduction off and accept zone 8 (hotrock accept) as this will give you the best depth. Try not to disc. out any zones but instead use the tone alert function to assign a low tone to targets you don't want to dig. Again, this will give you the best depth and will help with target masking. If your hunting an area with a lot of iron go ahead and disc. out zone 1&2 if it bothers you.

Sounds like I got it set up just like you explained. How do you know if you have the threshold set to max. performance if you can't hear it? The manual says that it's normally heard continuously during searching. Then it says to select the lowest level you can still hear.

If you have the latest program version (1.2) you will only hear the threshold just before ground balance or when in tootle non discriminatory mode (prospecting). By the way the instruction manual was never updated for the new version. If your ID shows just coin instead of 1c--50c/1$ you have the latest program version.

I get no threshold hum in discrimination, even with the threshold at max. I do if I turn the discrimination off. Do you think there is something wrong with the machine?

That explains everything. I was beginning to think that there was something wrong with the machine. Thanks!!

Kurt, go to the threshold adjustment stting then lift the coil waist high pull and hold the trigger or push the trigger forward and you will hear the threshold tone then adjust it for a slight hum. Like I said the QXT is a silent search detector in the disc.mode.

You only hear the threshold when you use the pinpoint mode and those times when you have Discriminate and Noise Cancel both turned OFF and there is a target at the extreme edge of detection.

Push the trigger forward and set your Threshold and SAT speed where you want them.

You can't really tell if your freq is set right unless your Turn both Discriminate and Noise Cancel OFF and introduce something into the extreme edge of the detection field so that you pick up a very slight hum. If the hum is steady, you are good to go. If the hum is broken/spotty you need to change Frequencies.

You CAN NOT use the pinpoint mode to determine if the freq is correct as the pinpoint mode is a shallow mode. Remember I've already posted that the Disc mode is deeper than the pinpoint mode.

Try and see.

Thanks Mike and everyone else for the help with this machine. I know one hunt isn't giving it much of a chance but it just isn't my cup of tea. Got a M6 on the way.

Kurt

The M6 is a real nice coin hunter. The tone id works at depth and there are a lot of good coils available for it.

I don't blame you for walking away from the QXT. That was my first impression once I discovered the tone alert only works down to around 5-6 inches. I was thinking, "Man - either this thing is broke or its a POS. No wonder it got discontinued" . But once I saw what kind of depth I could get with Discrimination and Noise Cancel turned off but still id deep coins I decided to keep it as a specialty machine just for deeep, slow-motion, coin hunting. I got a Tesoro Golden uMax for the every day 0-8" stuff that works well. Now I'm looking for a specialty machine for gold jewelry. Most probably that will be a Xterra 50 with the 5x10 19kHz DD coil. I don't want to sink much money into the specialty machines.

Good luck with the M6.
