Ever have one of those finds that blows your mind. The kind that only happens in a story you might read in a Treasure Magazine. Had a small version of that today. A friend had invited me over to hunt his new place and I was getting my gear ready to head over. A knock comes at the back door and it's one of my neighbors asking to borrow a metal detector. Seems he had purchased some old timbers for a project on his Victorian a couple of houses behind us. Nails in the wood had already broken at least one expensive saw blade and he was afraid to continue unless he could find them. I said sure and would be over in a few minutes. I grabbed the old Garrett Treasure Ace 100 for him since I was getting ready to leave with the Tesoro. I arrived at his house and showed him how to work the unit and used the all metal setting to ring my way across his front porch to identify all the nails there as a demo. Great he said and was ready to head over the handyman's place across the river who was cutting the wood for him and breaking blades. He asked how the units actually work for finding stuff in the ground. So I set the Garrett dial to just past the metal cap mark and made a pass along the side of his front walk. You guess it, the unit rang back a strong signal. The ground in his yard is soft and sandy with a light coat of grass. I dug down bare handed maybe five inches and saw a glint of silver. Moments later a 1909 Barber Half dollar is in my hand in nearly perfect condition. I was speechless. His wife came outside and neither of them had any idea what the coin was. I handed it to him and she looked it over too. Then she handed it back saying you found it so keep it. That was tempting but not the right thing to do. I handed it back saying your yard your coin with smile. I've attached a picture of it taken with my iPhone in the condition it was in coming out of the ground. Anyway he went on his way to check the wood he had purchased and I headed out to my friend's place to hunt with the Compadre. Found four wheat pennies and five memorial ones along with a bunch of trash. But that half dollar found at my neighbors made my day.
