The park people used to be friendly here and used to ask how you were doing, not so any more. You can metal detect but no digging. Surface Items only!
We've got Park workers in trucks and then there are Park Rangers in trucks.
They hold a lot of shindigs in the square putting up their shade and eating tents driving tent pegs in the ground, which leaves holes in the ground. When it rains towards the last day of an event and the concession trucks that leave that evening or next day spin there wheels and leave ruts. Then there is the big patches of dead grass they leave in the summer time.

Ron, I don't know how much help this will be but a couple of years ago I met a guy who got permission from WIU in Macomb to hunt on the University's property. At that time they (WIU) were trying to buy a piece of land in that area called Visnue (?). It was a Health spa/resort around 1910-1930 approx. Don't know if its worth your while to drive a little, but your alot closer to it than I am. It would be 90+ miles for me. Hope this helps, or gives you some ideas. It really sucks to not be able to hunt a site close to your home area because of other people's stupidity.

Good luck and take care.

Dave

Ron,
Try to find out why the park board decided to close the parks to metal detecting.
Invite them out for a club sponsored demo to show how a responsible person recovers a target.
You need to overcome what ever caused their actions by convincing them that you are a responsible member of the public and would respect the property.
A club of people usually will have a bit more sway with public officials than an individual.

You might even suggest to them a permit system giving them control over who and when ... boards always like the word "control".

jimmyk,
No probes either.
All I've found so far is a 1917 Merc at 7 to 8" and a 1936 Washington quarter at 4 to 5". Deepest coin so far was a new dime at 9",go figure. The two silver was found here in Quincy. Found a chain and charm, charm made in china,GP. Took chain to coin shop to get tested. Fred just put the chain up to his nose and sniffed it. Brass. You can really smell the brass. I forgot that old trick,GP.
Going to North Carolina this summer and will play with the prospecting mode a little bit.
