... I stopped in at the airbase/jail woods today after work for a quick jaunt with the Yeller Feller. I like it 'cause its right where I get out of work, so it's on the way home. It's nice to take in the fresh air and do a little digging in the hour around dawn.

I didnt turn up much, but here's a list of the stuff I did recover:

1. Cents. This place seems to be a penny magnet. Today's were a 1970, 1994 x2 and a 1942 wheatie. The Yeller Feller had no trouble signalling on them at a gain setting of 5, even though they were all 4-6" deep, under a mat of pine straw.

2. A "No. 16, Smokeless, UMC Co." shotshell base. I find a ton of 12 ga. bases, but few no. 16, or 16 ga. as we might refer to it nowadys. Actually, they werent uncommon back when , but they faded from fashion prior to WWII. This gives an additional dating clue.

It rang in at the nickle-tab notch of the scale, which is normal, in case you were wondering... :smoke:

3. 10-12 pulltabs and several foil ketchup pouches. This used to be the conjugal visiting area when it was the jail, and there was much eating and drinking of fast-food carryout, no doubt.

Okay, big deal, right? Well every site has a story and this one is no different.
I know this is a multiuse site and spans a period from the 1930's-2002...roughly 70 years. In that time, the area I am searching has been part of the rec area for both a WWII era through Cold War SAC airbase and for the already mentioned jail, which took over from the base in the 70's

What I will do now is grid-search the Wheatie spots, which I have logged and then expand my search to eventually take in the whole area. It's about an acre, so I will be at it for awhile.

The guy who "keeps an eye on stuff" around the airport stopped by for a chat, as well. His name is Bill and he told me that some of the adjoining land had been sold, and that "my woods" may have been included in the purchase. He was pretty jovial this time, but wasn't too impressed with my grubby cents and pulltabs.

He told me that eventually a banking service center will go in there, so I wont let this one get away and will keep pounding it as long as I can. I've worked other sites like this and sooner or later, Ill turn a bit of silver or maybe a jewelry trinket from some of the former inmates' conjugal visitors. Never give up!

Good hunting David. It can be really frustrating to look at a site after it's been built on and you can no longer detect on it and wish you could have detected it more. You are ahead of that game. Keep hunting and look forward to hearing about your next finds.
