Roddrus, if you've only had the detector a day or two, you might need some more time to get to know it. Certainly, you can't expect 505 performance on the quicksilver- the two are worlds away in terms of appearance and abilities. For example, you said that the 505 is much more accurate in target ID. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the quicksilver only has 4 segments for target ID. Therefore, more stuff (junk included) will have to fit into these categories. Remember, this is only an intro-level detector, and is very basic in design. If you only used it once, take it out once more and do exactly as your manual says. If you still don't like it, return it or sell it and wait for your 505 to come back from the shop. Hope this helps, abcoin.

I have a quicksilver that my wife uses and she loves it.. I take it out every once in awhile. Its a crazy coin finder, likes quarters and dimes. I wish it had a pinpoint feature though.. Give it a few more hunts.

I have a quicksilver and i wouldn't waste my money on anything else more expensive.I have learned that it is the combination of visual indication and tone that is the key.Example-if you get the third segment lit and an alternating medium and high tone it's absolutely a full size aluminum can,a high pitch and a fourth segment lit IS a coin.Take the time to learn the unit as i have and it will serve you well.I found a wheat,a relic, and unfortunately a spider bite my first time out with my quicksilver.

I just got a quicksilver for Fathers day 2009, my first metal detector. I've only been able to use it twice since it has been raining in New England for the last three weeks. The first time I went out, I went to the beach for an hour. In that hour, I found a quarter, a nickel, three dimes and three pennies. I also found two aluminum cans, some piece of junk metal and a couple of bottle caps. Overall I was thrilled. I only discriminated against Iron. The second time I went out was this past Sunday night in a wooded area near a pond. I only got about 15 minutes in before the rain started. Only discriminating against iron, I first found a bottle cap and a pull tab. I then discriminated against everything except coin. On my way out, I found a quarter, a dime and a penny all in the same vicinity. I'm still getting used to metal detecting, and can't wait to use it more. It's raining again today, but once that sun comes out, you can be sure I will be doing some more coin shooting. (All my coin finds so far have been post 1972) - I've been very happy with the quicksilver so far.

It's nice to read that someone else from New England is posting. Tired of rain 4 sure. Going to the Cape for a week starting on the 11th, gonna hit as many beaches as I can. After 5 p.m. all beaches are free to enter. I have a pioneer 202, A 505, a Whites xlt, and the Safari from Minelab. All detectors work real well.
