Quick question about tone ID and the V3i..

Rattlehead

New member
Howdy folks. While waiting for my V3i to arrive I've been watching a few videos on youtube and noticed that most people seem to be using tone ID. This is a feature that I had on the old XLT but never used. I never liked it because I have a hard time hearing what I call that "round" sound with the pitch constantly changing as I sweep the detector in different directions. I know this machine is a completely different animal than what I'm used to, so I was wondering if its possible to broaden the range of the tone ID so that it doesn't change so easily.

For example:

VDI's less than 15 = one very low tone.
VDI's between 16 and say 35 = one medium tone (all sounding the same).
VDI's between 36 and 55 = slightly higher, but again all at the same pitch.
VDI's of 56 and above at the highest pitch.

Is this possible while running all 3 frequencies? Or can I just turn tone ID off altogether like with the XLT so that everything sounds off at the same pitch? I apologize if this has been covered before, but I didn't spot it in my search.

Thanks!

Yes to all of your questions. Here is an owners manual if you want to get a head start: http://media.whiteselectronics.com/manuals/V3%20Manuals/spectra_v3i_instruction_manual.pdf

You can have one tone or 191 tones or anywhere in between. You can assign a selectable tone to each of the 191 VDI numbers. You can turn Tone ID off and you will be back to your "round sounds" but to most of us, Tone ID On provides far more information. Your choice. BTW, How to change tones is on page 49.

Great thing about the V3i is its adjustability. I have a place that is pretty trash free (no pull tabs) and I use the factory coin and jewelry program, set vdi -1 to -95 to zero tones and everything from 0 to 59 vdi set at 200 tone and 60 to 94 vdi rings in at 255 tone. I use polar plot in analyze mode for a quick idea of what the target is and dig everything.

This is a setup that I use specificaly for this one place, I go to other places to hunt and use diferent programs I have set up for them. The V3i is a great machine.
