Quick question about platinum

It has a lower conductivity than iron. Does this mean in order to find any platinum rings, one would have to hunt in all metals mode or is it even beyond the capability of most detectors?

It is just slightly lower than gold but not lower than iron....My XT50 will read Platinum at around 3, iron is always in the negative side unless it is a large piece. Large iron will give me a hard hit, platinum is a softer hit. Hope this helps. HH

My research indicates platinum has an electrical conductivity value that is only slightly above ferrous metals.

The others are right. It is more conductive than iron, not lower than iron. Where a particular platinum ring will depend on the size. Just like yellow gold: the bigger the ring, the higher the TID. I suppose that very VERY dainty thin platinum ladies solitaires would read in the very low foil range.

- - did you know that a hundred years ago, lightning arrestors were known to be made of platinum?

Dave did you ever get that ring tested? I know you were showing pics of it and werent certain before. Ive never been fortunate enough to find a platinum ring yet but a few I know who have say that a mans band reads lower than comparable sized gold putting it about a nickel or less which corresponds about with the chart youve got here.
Makes me think I should recheck all the silver rings Ive found, maybe I do have one:surprised:

I never did get it tested, but I found some definitive information about the hallmark.
This particular platinum band reads a solid 27-28 on my Fisher F70. This is below nickels, which hit hard at 33-35.
I would call this high foil range, for lack of a better name.

And yep, it looks like silver, although the weight gives it away.

So it weighs out more like gold? Thats something I will have to look for when I pull out my silver rings. Thats nice about gold, the weight I mean. my eyes are too good and I dont wear glasses but to read so when I find a ring on the beach I have to wait till I get home to verify if its gold but I always bounce it around in my hand a bit and see if I get that heavier than normal for its size gold feel.

I dont really know what a lightning arrestor is but will look it up. be nice to find some of those wouldnt it:yikes:

Actually, it weighs more than gold. Platinum has a specific gravity of 21.5, while alloy gold is more like 16-17. The platinum ring is very heavy. Most people refer to a lightning arrestor as a "lightning rod."
