Quick Observation about the V3

I got out today. First time in 2010!, and first time with the Eclipse 950 coil. I dug some nice targets including my first IH with the V3, and some colonial era buttons like the one pictured.

I purposely reworked an area that I had worked with my DFX and with the V3 with the D2 coil. First thing I noticed was that the recommended gain was 11-15. Much higher than I got with the D2, which usually hovered from 6-9 at this site.

I worked the site slowly with the recovery delay and filters low and was able to separate good targets from trash.

It has become apparent to me that the V3 is a noisier detector than the DFX, but with the noise comes added sensitivity to tiny items. I was using Best Data for quite a while and even in 3 frequency I was able to find lead .22 fragments several inches deep. Some were no larger than a match head!

As I got closer to the county road, the EMI became a bit of an issue. 22.5KHz seemed to help a bit. After reading Larry's suggestion I realize I should have tried frequency offset.

I am still thrilled with the performance of the V3. I have not been skunked in any of my outings yet! The V3 continues to find the goods!

Nice Indian Neil, looks like some really good detail. You guys must have some kind soil up there.

I still have not found one of those, although judging from the two Large Cents (almost completely featureless) and multitudes of wheats I have dug here in Southern Maryland, if I ever do find one I will be lucky to even identify it as an Indian.

Believe me, this was certainly not one of my finer IH cents. This site has some minor mineralization, but my other "sandy" sites produce beautiful Indians that look like they were dropped yesterday!

Neil, not all coils are created equal and neither are all D2 coils. My 9.5 and two D2 coils all read a suggested Rx15. You could just as well have gotten a 9.5 that would give a lower suggested RX 15. Believe me the suggested RX is an overrated feature. I have to find some info and will post it. Rob

I'm glad you got out for some hunting Neil. We are getting close to hunting time here in Illinois. The snow is slowly melting and forecast temps in the 40's this weekend. Must be a heat wave coming...
