Quick exit from my detecting site.

Saturday I was detecting at my regular dirt pile spot. I decided to go over the back edge of the piles that where just flattened. The dirt was loose and the dog and I slid about 8 feet to the ground below. I started to detect the unspoiled forest ground as best I could with a 13" coil. It wasn't working out so I headed back. The dog ran back up the pile and I slowly followed. Before I could get back to the top I heard her barking. She hardly ever barks unless for a good reason. I get to the top and see my dog barking up a large tree. It took me a couple minutes to find what she was barking at. She had treed a tiny bear cub. I nervously looked around for momma bear and then ran for my car. Luckily the dog beat me to the car and jumped in. Off we went. I hope the cub got down ok and rejoined its mother and they went on their way. I'll go back tomorrow. HH. Matt

Better get some bear repellant or pepper spray Matt.....that was a close one. Momma had to be somewhere nearby.

Glad you and your pet are safe. Take care - Jim

Bear spray for sure! Those bear mommas have no sense of humor...

Glad you didn't have an unpleasant meeting.

Good move...how you deal with bears also depends on the type of bear, too.

Oh yes ... momma bear definately would have handed you and your dog your rear-ends. :stretcher: Smart move to exit quickly ...

REVIER, love the warning sign!!

Yeah Revier! Great adventure story Matt! The old line "bears are more afraid of humans than we are of them' dont always apply to every bear or every human! Great post!

I seen a bear run accross the farm field i hunt it was a big black bear , and his tracks came up to our house as well , he tipped the humming bird feeder over , if he comes at me i will ingage him with my preditor little eagle shovle , mainly on his nose and teeth, then on his head ,

LOL! Great sign REVIER! Black bears are common in my area. Heads up for sure tho I am going to start hunting the woods now as well as the piles. Good luck and be safe. HH. Matt

How do you know you're in Bear country?...You find tiny bells in the Bear scat!!!

Yea, it's an old joke but still funny...sorry, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity after reading the sign.

Classic mountain digger! LOL! I tried to detect the woods at my spot today. Not only was there hardly any open ground to swing over, but the bugs were terrible and it was hotter than when I'm on the dirt piles in the open. I found an old path and took a pic with my dog on the path. The other pic is the tree that the bear cub climbed up. To the left side of this pic is where the flattened dirt piles are pushed towards the woods. It is here where I initially left the bare ground and climbed down to the forest floor. Its about an 8 ft slide from top to bottom. I think I'll save the woods for Spring and Autumn. HH. Matt

Revier,  berries & squirrel fur = Black Bear, Bells & pepper = Grizzly. Matthias, you have a beautiful dog. Ahhh man's best friend loyal to the very end, doesn't judge and will love you unconditionally. Stay safe and HH - Jim

great story, glad you made it out ok... i had to read the sign a few times till i got the joke.....gave me a pretty good chuckle once i did ...thanks for sharing...

Yea, those bears are nothing to mess with, especially when they have cubs around. Play it safe. I'd at least carry a can of bear repellent if you can't carry a side arm for protection. Make sure it's handy on your hip or it does you no good.

Does anybody know how far a bear can chase you into the woods?

Only halfway, the rest of the way its chasing you out of the woods.
