at the present i'm using a ace 250 and i'm not really satisfied with it.i have been using it for about three months and i feel like i'm missing al lot of targets .i mainly work the beach's and the odd park or two . it does't like going from dry to wet sand . it doesn't seem to have gb or any way to adjust to salt/black sand. as i have be reading all the relevent posts for garrett and bounty hunter. i'm thinking of buying something thats hassle free and it works .66 years of age ,i don't want to be mucking around with something that i'm not happy with .i md as a hobby . if i have to work in the garden in my retired years, i want to do it my way . i live in cairns north queensland ,heaps of tourists all year round ,theirs got to be a lot of little treasures lost here just waiting for yours truly to find .the competion here works in teams with x rated machines. doesn't sound like much fun that way .hoping some one may point me in a better direction .i remain yours blowfly[the cat's name][ mines robert]

The T4 has some depth on the 250, neither of them have true ground tacking, but a preset ground balance. If your looking to mainly hunt wet sand, and BLACK sand, I would suggest investing in 2 detectors...The BH-T4 or Tesoro Compadre for land and dry sand, and a PI machine for wet sand. no VLF detector is going to go from dry sand to wet sand and like it much...some of the high end White's and Minelab machines have modes for wet sand/black sand, but that is a LOT of cash to flip on a hobby...

I wish you luck,

hello blowfly, and robert, our good friend here on this site nugget is an expert with the t4 and has found some stuff on australias beaches. it would do you well sir to talk to him concerning this; you can also see his posts - theyre simply astounding. i own a qd2 and understand they dont do well in wet sand. good luck and hh,

Hi blowfly, if you could spring a mite more for the Land Star you could do
better on wet salt beaches. It's manual adjust GB control is more
tunable to the capacitance effect of wet salt sand (no trouble at all in
dry sand), as opposed to the factory preset "automatic" GB on the QD
and some other units. I do pretty well in the wet salt by setting the GB
to diminish the effect(similar to adjusting to iron oxides), then fine tune
by decreasing the sensitivity a bit and increasing the disc. level a bit.
I've found rings and coins this way with my LS. The wetter the sand
(closer to the surf), the greater the settings needed, but it does work.
All VLF's have trouble with wet salt sand, but the variable controls on
the LS(especially the manual GB) really help, as I've stated. Some other
units have a "salt" setting, but this is really just a preset sensitivity
decreaser that still requires a disc. increase as well, depending on the
strength of the salt effect.

This problem is of course why pulse units are the "dedicated" units of
choice for salt beaches, though effective pulse units with discrimination
ability are still in R&D. Good Luck in your endeavors!

I have a Pioneer505 that works great on dry sand with the standard 8 inch coil. When I move to the wet sand and shallow water I switch to the 4 inch gold nugget coil and adjust the sensitivity, which works well for me.

I would have to agree with the gang on this one any VLF will struggle. however :detecting:the tracker IV can be tuned to work on the wet sand, it's all up to the operator. I find when the coil is kept at a constant height and sweep speed, the falsing is greatly reduced. Also working from the wet sand line down to the water is the best detecting pattern. Even my Infinium LS has spurious noises if you detect parrallel to the water. Work at 90% and that will quieten down the beast. The sens will need to be bought back to 12 oclock or there-abouts, and I now use the disc on disc setting on the toggle, and the knob turned to the 9 oclock position. Hope this helps. regards Nugget.
