Well I was hunting last weekend and ran into a fellow hunter. In casual conversation this fellow said that by turning up the threshold to max I would get better depth. I was heading out when this guy offered up this info so wasnt able to try it. What I have been doing is getting a strong threshold then backing it off to a low hum. I'm not sure about this one. From what I understand there is a dealer in MA that reprograms the PI to hunt gold better and he passed this info along and now somehow ended up in my hands.

This question will be answered the next time I go out. I'm excited to try this and I know the question will be answered next time I go out but in the mean time wanted to get some feedback by all of you(the experts).

I love hunting the water but at times there is so much sand I cant seem to get deep enough. I hope this info is real as to get out to the deeper targets. Thanks...

set the threshold to where u work, meaning the dry sand kinda low, but hearable

in the surf and waves, set it higher so u can here the change over the noise.

that guy up north just makes the older models more sensitive to everyting............the newer models all come set that way now, but that is very very old technology in the detector business today.

feel free to ask him, i feel certain he will tell u the same.

The guy fed you a line of B.S. that was piled about as high as I have ever heard.

You will never hear any target audio with the threshold maxed out.
You won't find a thing, except for the need for a hearing aid to offset your hearing loss.

A lot of Excal users set the threshold to just barely audible and it works as you can hear faint (deep) targets with this setting provided the background noise isn't too loud. (adjust volume to suit)
Steve in Peurto Rico proposed in an earlier post to set the threshold a little louder (just a little louder) to allow the Excal to be more sensitive to chains and other small gold. Steve reported that he had success with these settings.
I have tried this setting myself and found that when hunting in the water it increased the amount of falsing I heard especially at the turning point of each swing, especially if the bottom was not smooth. In order to tune out the falsing I had to drop the sensitivity level, so I lost out on depth to a minor degree. In short I found it to be a bit of a trade off, but it is your call. Dry/wet sanding would be a little different no doubt.

Good Hunting to You,

Yep, wet sand and shallow water is a different.
I set the threshold just a llllllittle louder and before it starts falsing. The depth is important for me.

Greetings,I think what the fellow was talking about was increasing
the threshold just slightly audible,to hear any slight changes,
indicating a deep target. If you haven't purchased Clive James
Clynick's new book on the Excal only,it is well worth the price,
and has all these little secrets in it. You will be reading it
many times to get all that info.out of it.It isn't the one at the
top of the page for the Sov and Excal,it's the new one for the
Excal only.Good luck and HH Joe

jcham, I think you may be getting into some poor counsel in this advice. I'll tell ya where my Threshold is and it's Clive's (cjc) way and it works. If you have not read the book, then this may be hard to swallow. I adjust it occasionally during the hunt, as I hunt deeper or shallower, just to make sure that it's good. I turn it to just audible and then down a hair to just not audible. I can hear the electonics of the unit working and it is almost a subsonic tone, but it is not readily audible. Hey, if ya'll think I'm out there, OK, it's working. It works well and I don't get all the feedback from too high of a Threshold. It will DEFINITELY let you know, if you go over a target! You should experiment, but use the advice of those who find the gold and show you the money!

GH; Are you talking about being able to hear sounds outside of the frequency range of human hearing or are you talking about hearing sounds at a volume level that is so small that it is not possible to hear the sound normally?
This one has me puzzled,
