Questions / Problem with my AT PRO

Dig It

New member
I recently traded my G2 for an AT PRO. The first day out I was really enjoying it and then it started acting erratic. If I moved the coil wire going into the unit the problem seemed to get better. I called Garrett and talked to someone there and they agreed it sounded like a coil problem. To my surprise they sent me a new coil free of charge after I told them the serial #. I used it today and all seemed well until about 45 minutes into the hunt, same thing happened but did not seem to get better moving the coil wire.

My questions are:
Has anyone had a similar problem and did they have to send there unit into Garrett? I was reading a post on this forum and some people said there unit was not as hot when they got it back from Garrett. I love how deep my unit seems to be and I don't want to lose depth for a more stable detector but on the other hand its hard to even hunt when it gets erratic. Sorry for rambling just want to make the right decision. I would appreciate advice from anyone who may have had a similar problem with there AT PRO.

Couple of questions if you don't mind me asking.

1. Did you check the pins on the old coil wire to see if they were bent?
2. Did you check the pins on the new coil wire after it started acting erratic to make sure there was no bent pins?

The reason I'm asking is it's pretty easy to bend the pins on the coil wire plugin on the ATPro if your not careful. Had the same problem on the Infinium as well.

Couple more questions and don't take it the wrong way.

3. Did you GB the machine?
4. Did you try lowering the sensitivity?

I have this same problem from time to time...it is worst right after I change coils...turn off the machine for about 3 minutes, then hold down the power button for about 5 seconds until the machine "resets" to factory defaults...I am going to senf my machine back to Garrett over the winter to have it looked at...I think the ATs are so sensitive, that any outside EMI makes them flake out...Either that, or they are generating Self Harmonics...

TheGeorgiaCanuck,
I appreciate your questions. I just checked the pins on both coils and there are no problems there. I do always GB before I start hunting and couple of times while hunting just to make sure I am still ground balanced.( I try to find a spot with no metal around and GB in that spot.)

I have lowered the sensitivity and that seems to help a little sometimes but sometimes even when I lower the sensitivity and push the GB button it just starts beeping erratically before I even start moving the coil up and down. Any other suggestion would be appreciated. I don't take things the wrong way when I am asking for help, just appreciate people taking time to try and help.
Thanks again, Keith

Thank you for your comments also GoGoGopher, I just might have to send my unit in as well.

Np, Keith.

One more question. Do you have your cell phone in your pants pocket while hunting? Sometimes they cause ALLOT of noise on detectors. Especially PI ones.

Send it in. It needs to be fixed.

The new ones with cam locks and extended arms don't have the issues some of the first ones had. For anyone looking, be sure to look for a new version or one that has been checked.

Like Bart said. I would send it in if I were you. Mine was doing the same thing so I sent it back. I sent it in on the 19th of November. I just called Garrett and mine should be back to me by tomorrow. Must have taken some time because of the holidays. Hopefully it back to working like it should.

I would say to turn the sensitivity down on the detector when ground balancing it if you haven't tried that already. Also try switching it between the 4 frequencies (F1,F2,F3,F4). If you've tried both of those things and you're still having the problem, I would call Garrett and see what they say. I just sent my At Pro in, and they fixed it up very well.

I've had that happen to my AT-Pro too I just hold the power button in until it resets to the factory settings. My serial number is 000010 I'd guess I got an early one? (lol)

Send it in and don't forget to get the upgrade if you don't have it.

$40 bucks for upgrade, but they need it at the factory by 12/31/11.

Goes up to $80 for upgrade after 12/31, I think.

You didn't like the G2?

Good Hunting

Denny
