questions and no one can answer them?

It seems like the X-Terra 70 is the hot detector with all of the new ones that have come out...So how does it do in trash and iron...I know when it has a small coil you may be able to do things that we all have wished for.

Say you have iron nails mixed in with a good target does it avarage out the target or mask everthing out?

If you discriminate out targets do you lose depth? Can you disc out say pull tab and if there is a good target mixed in will it see it?

I would think that the higer KHz coil would be better for relic hunting?

Does it give target ID in all metal? Any info you want to share would be cool.

Thanks it sounds like a better machine then the T2 I had one and it was heard to keep it from being eratic you had to really lower the sens way down. How deep do you think it goes compared to the Explorer 2 or the Fisher CZ and the Nautalis?

Hi Icpm.
I can't speak for the X-Terra70, but I do own the the 30.I still consider myself to be a fairly inexperienced detectorist, but in order to answer your Question about how the 70 will go iron infested ground I can only pass on the experience that I had with the 30 yesterday. I got the all clear to go onto a site yesterday where a 130yr old house stood only a couple of days previously. This was only the second time that I attempted to hunt on such a site. The other site was an old pub that had burnt down in 1927.That time I was using a Bounty Hunter Tracker4. About 5Min's later I gave up as it was impossible to hunt with because of all the iron.
Yesterday, I put the 30 into discriminate mode and it was quiet, only giving signals over non ferrous targets.there were a few broken beeps coming through which may have been iron, but you know that it is rubbish.I did put it into all metal mode to see what was in the ground.Every single inch of ground seemed to be full of iron!I was very impressed with the X-Terra's ability to handle such bad ground!
It still comes down to operator skills when it comes to finding stuff;I didn't find any coins there, but I did manage to find one of those gunpowder measuring containers that they used to load those old muskets. I did feel a bit overwhelmed in how to attack the site; but I did try a systematic grid strait though the middle of the house, but wasn't quite sure of some of the signals as I was digging a lot of different alloys. Then I heard the sound of a model plane engine(one of my other interests).
You do get TID in all metal.
A few of the other guys can add to what I've said.
I hope this is helpful.

In heavy iron trash the stock coil does "OK" but I wish for a smaller coil also. I find that reducing sensitivity, slowing the sweep and raising the coil a bit helps immensely. On targets co-located with iron the 70 seems to do very well, after making the proper adjustments, but again a smaller coil will help a lot.

Early on I posted a question about the tracking. Should it be left on at all times or turned off in iron? The answer for me is to leave it on. I am getting better responses on non-ferrous targets in iron with it on.

All metal mode is actually a 0 disc mode and yes it has target ID.

The noise cancel feature works as advertised. At sites that give other machines problems I have no trouble running high sensitivity settings after cancelling.

"It seems like the X-Terra 70 is the hot detector with all of the new ones that have come out."... I would actually say ALL the X-Terra's because there really haven't been all that many X-Terra 50's hitting the classifieds. Not really for the amount of time they have been out. As for the X-T 70, yes, it IS the 'hot detector' to talk about because it offers quite a bit for the $$$.

"So how does it do in trash and iron...I know when it has a small coil you may be able to do things that we all have wished for."... You really answered the question because for ANY make or model detector to do really well in a trashy environment, you need to have a coil that is best suited for that. Something in the 5"-6" and no more than 6

It's sometimes difficult to answer posts that pose general questions without knowing specific hunting conditions, operator experience, etc. While it would be easy to adopt a "this is the greatest machine ever in history" approach, that would have been a disservice to both Minelab and our fellow hunters. I think that I can speak for those of us who were asked to field test the X-Terra's and say that we were chosen because we are actual users with many years of experience in the field. And because we are straight shooters who provide honest opinions and value them as well.

So please don't think your post was being ignored. I personally have been knocking around a response to it since you first posted. Monte saved me the writer's cramp!

With that being said, I think that Monte aptly answered your questions as best as any of us could. He makes a number of good points about the X-Terra's in general and I would only add that the 30 is quite a good performer as well along with its bigger brothers the 50 & 70.

I would also refer you to the numerous field tests and user reports on this forum that should provide relevant insights into the entire X-Terra line of metal detectors.

As Barnacle Bill pointed out, there is no "magic wand" machine out there. And there never will be. However, in my opinion, for single frequency technology, Minelab has really done something special with the X-Terra's and judging by the few (if any) turning up for sale used I think that the majority of new owners of the machines agree.

Well thank you all I will be neeeding this forum to learn the 70 and I will post my finds.

Thanks
