Questions about using the 705

Hi, I have been using the X705 for about 3 months now and am getting to know it but I am still a novice. (have read most of the e-book on the Xterra, but my retention is not great at my age!), so I have some areas I need help with:

1. What is the best coil for finding deep lead minnieballs? Is there any problem with using a lot of DISC in Notch 2 while hunting for minnieballs?
2. When you pinpoint after finding a target, so the numbers on the ID actually mean anything?
3. What does ID 46 actually mean--is this runover from iron like 47 and 48?
4. What is the best way to maximize depth while still getting a reliable ID number?
5. Do most people use tracking GB or auto GB?
6. Does stabilization actually work and is it useful in areas with a lot of junk?

Thanks,
Andy from Hillsborough

The deepest cool I have in my soul for finding minie balls is the 9inch 18.75 coil. My 10.5 7.75 kHz is good to. I use a couple other that Are maybe a little deeper in open fields. I mostly relic hint in the winter. When relic hunting dig those deep faint -8 they for me have sometimes been minie balls in the 12-14 inch range. If you are trying to find minie balls you must be relic hunting. So I would run in all metal two tones and dig every high time no matter what the id is. On pinpointing I never go by what the numbers say they change to much while in pinpoint mode.

Thanks. right now I have the stock coil. The place I am hunting is loaded with aluminium slaw and old farm iron. Would you still recommend AM with 2 tones? Also, did you mean -8 or +8 for the deep ID not to ignore? The minnieballs I have tested on my Xterra read about 28-32. Does that make sense to you. Thanks for your help,
Andy from Hillsborough

Deep targets start to lose proper Id at great depths. That is why I dig -8 a lot of the time it is trash but about half the time it is really deep minie balls. The -8's are usually faint and sometimes i lose the signal once I dig the hole and have to keep digging until I find it with my pinpointer. Most ghost signals people talk about are not really ghost signals they are just really deep. And you have to keep digging and use a pinpointer once you open the hole and the detector won't pick it up anymore. I couldn't tell you how many targets I barely get a tone on and then cut the plug and my detector will no longer pick the target up. So I just dig and dig. Usually these are over a foot deep targets (minie balls). If you are hunting where civil war stuff may be I would hunt in two tones and dig every high tone. You will dig a lot of trash but you will dig a lot of goodies. I dig a lot of targets that Id under 20. If you want to try out one of my coils let me know and I will let you borrow one. You just lay shipping.

Thanks for the info. and the offer. What coil/s would you recommend for maximum depth for lead? I get about 10 to 11" in an airtest with a minnieball in AM. Does your Xterra do much better?
Thanks,
Andy

I have a 70. And it air test a little deeper than that with a 10.5 7.5 kHz. But in the ground my 9inch 18.75khz coil is about two inches deeper in the ground. My ground usually ground balanced between 35-50. Most of the time around 45. I really like my 6 inch 18.75 kHz coil for trashy areas though. I was hunting with a buddy a few years ago and he wAs using a xlt and I got a good high tone and he wanted to check the target as we were comparing the detectors. His big coil said iron and I garanteed him it wasn't. I dug the hole an me it was a civil war revolver bullet. The xlt is a great detector but a big coil will pick up several targets and sometimes mask the good ones. I have several Minelab coils and a couple other brand coils. I use the other brand in one field because it has a electric fence around it and this is the only coils that do not get bothered by it. Not saying they are better coils just no interference. I think I have seven coils. Give me a pm if you would like to try one of them. If you are ever in Kentucky give me a holler and we will go detecting.
