Questions about the Bigfoot coil.

Mick in Dubbo

New member
Hi all.
The Bigfoot coil looks really interesting. Just got a few questions about it.Look forward to any answers that can be given.
1)How much does it weigh?
2)What sort of depth is typical for it? 6in? 10in?
3)How well does it mimic a small coil? a)In trashy ground, if you go to all metal, would this make it small enough?
b)When poking around play equipment with the toe of the coil; is it a shallow seeking enough to respond like a sniper type coil, and not pick up the surrounding metal (like a sniper coil)?
4)I presume that these coils come in different frequencies;ie one type for the MXT and another for the prizms. Is that correct?
5) Are they still available for the Prizms?
Thanks.

I have had a Bigfoot coil for about a year and it is my favorite coil to use. It covers a lot of ground but it is not really that good in trashy areas. There is just too much coil there to be that effective. Maximum depth is about 6 inches on average for coin size targets. Most coins and jewelry I find are at the surface to about 4 inches. That said, it is one heck of a good coil for working sports fields and other open spaces. I have found a substantial amount of gold, platinum and silver jewelry during the last year with the Bigfoot. The DFX, MXT and the M-6 are about 15 kHz and they can use the same coils including the Bigfoot. Bigfoots are also made for the XLT, Prizm, and Pro XL. I like using the Bigfoot in kids wood chip playgrounds, but if you get within about 4 or 5 inches of the metal playground equipment it will squeal loudly. As far as the weight is concerned it only weighs about 2 ounces more than the stock 950 coil. I really can't tell the difference.

Hey Mick I recently purchased the Bigfoot coil from Ron @ Ron's Detectors (Thanks Ron) and finally got to use it for about an hour and a half at a soccer complex and was really liked it. I still need to get use to it but was able to get within about 2 inches of the steel goals before the detector sounded off. If you purchase one I think you'll like it. And boy it sure covers allot of ground.

I love it for the UK fields or less trashy areas here. If I'm in a playground or near steel fencing, I just turn down the gain and get closer--the depth is ok for most parks etc even set lower.
It is my favorite too.
I now have a chest mount and the entire arm and coil is only 2 lbs- & it's on a bungee, so it just floats. :detecting:

Yeah!
This is exactly the type of hunting I do.Mostly open areas of parks and around play equipment eta.I love the fact that it doesn't go deeper than 6inches as I don't go deeper than that myself.Sounds perfect for my wants.I'll get a prizm to attach it to first, then work up from their later(let my finds pay for a better machine(got to love this hobby)).Thanks for all the info everybody and if anybody has anything more to say, then I'm still all ears!
It seems that most people who have the Bigfoot, seem to have attached it to the MXT.Who knows I might end up with two of them. One for the prizm and one for an MXT:twodetecting:
Cheers.

Mick in Dubbo,
It's Bill from the Blue Mountains,I use mine on my MXT. The best coil I own. Go to the soccer, football fields, parks, etc turn the discrimination up and go for the one and two dollar coins. You can cover large areas quickly. It balances very well. It gets about 4 inches depth but thats fine on sports Fields as you cannot dig too deep. Its not bad around play equipment just turn the sensitivity down when you get close. I find it good on fairly trashy sites as its detects such a narrow strip.

Just get one.

Hi Bill.
I was born and raised at Blaxland. My folks still live there.Where abouts do you live?
Sounds like you are detecting on some of my old stomping grounds, as I used to play soccer when I was growing up.
Got to love those $1 and $2 coins. It doesn't take long for them to add up!This coil sounds perfect for hunting them.
I've got several detectors on my wish list, but due to this coil, the Whites is at the top of the list.Had my eye on the MXT for a while now, it's just a matter of getting the finances (finds) to agree with it.Taking ten weeks off work to go job hunting in Newcastle after the Labor day long week-end,so I'm hoping to have something like this set by then('cause if I'm not job hunting I'll be detecting, weekdays anyway).
Thanks for replying and the insight:thumbup:

Mick,
I have lived in Penrith or Springwood all my life. I also own a tesoro silver umax that I like because of its very light weight. It has no bells and whistles but you can get a 18*3 inch coil for it just like the bigfoot on the MXT. I got one on ebay not long ago. Tesoro call their coil the "clean sweep". Comparing the MXT and Tesoro, the MXT can tell by the VDI numbers what is a one or two dollar coin very precisely. The bigfoot coil is light and balances well with the MXT. The Tesoro is basic audio discrimination only so you set the discrim up to just under $1 and $2 coin and dig anything the beeps. In reality its only twist tops that are above $1 and $2 coins so digging the odd twist top isn't too bad. The "clean sweep" is very heavy as its resin filled so the whole detector set up is unbalanced but very affective. I don't think the tesoro goes as deep as the MXT but it is only base model. I,m sure a higher model tesoro would be just as deep as the MXT. Just remember the "clean sweep" can only be used on uMax 10.6 kHz models.
If you go for the MXT try and get a 6 by 10 inch elliptical coil and a 4 by 6 inch shooter coil. The 6 by 10 is a great general purpose and its shape lets you get very close to playground equip by turning the sensitivity down. The 4 by 6 is the trash master.

Bill.
That's a great part of the world.
Thanks for the info on the Tesoro.Never heard much about it before.Minelab seem to dominate the market here a fair bit, so it makes it a bit harder to get to know other brands.Bit of a shame really as there are plenty of good brands of detectors out there.
You've got a lot of really good spots to go detecting there, wished I had so many (hopefully soon). There is a number of old historical spots there as well which would make it interesting as well.Ever tried the old coach stop next to the railway line on the corner of the Highway and Mitchell's Pass? That building must date back to the 1820's.It is surrounded by barbed wire now, but I bet the ground around it would yield a few good finds!
All the best.
