Questions about some symbols............

Does anyone know what these spanish or indian symbols mean? They are carved on the face of a rock bluff. There are two other symbols but I could not make out what they were because you could barely see them.

Hi Fred,
Can't say about the arch, but the cross figure looks somewhat like a Greek Orthodox. Possibly there was some Greek padres that influenced whoever made it. Any idea about the age? Very interesting, we saw similar petroglyphs in AZ. Mostly animal figures, lizzards etc.

Let me begin by saying that I am personally skeptical about most treasure signs, maps, etc. The following information is based on various references, not my own beliefs or experience.
A cross with two arms is sometimes called a Patriarchal Cross, and sometimes a Caravaca cross. In treasure signs, it suggests a Spanish or Mexican connection.
The semicircle with a dot in the center can indicate treasure, a mine, or a source of water-- usually directly under the rock on which the symbol appears.
A cross in combination with the semicircle/dot symbol is sometimes said to mark the site of a shrine near the entrance, where miners would pray before and after each shift. According to one source, Spanish law required there to be such a shrine within 200 varas of the entrance. (A vara is a little less than a yard-- about 33".)

a chapel for Indians? There were lots of arrowheads in the immediate area, and yes, there was water in the area too! Thanks for the information. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

Sorry I can't be of any real help on this one, Kelley. Of course, the Spanish often mined in areas inhabited by Indians; and there were usually Indian laborers at Spanish mines, many of whom were converts to Christianity.
Best of luck,
Buckram

We are just inside of what is known as the Hill Country in Texas. Bandera, Texas is approximately twenty five miles west of here.
there are lots of Indian relics in this area. I am going to insert a picture of an old swimming hole to give you an indication of what the area looks like. Also, just up stream from the old swimming hole is a water crossing that was used for hundreds of years by both the Indians and explorers of the area.
Why do you ask where I live? Kelley (Texas)

there is no gold in this part of Texas. I received an e-mail a few minutes ago asking for information about the signs and cave. I kinda think they are related to the Indians that lived in the area. I have never heard of a Spanish Mine in this area, but have heard that there were some down in the Big Bend area of Texas. Also, that cave is full of rattlesnakes. I rolled a rock into the entrance and those snakes sounded off, and the place had a bad smell from the snakes living there. I had trouble controlling my horse because the snakes were so loud and smelled so bad. I could not get away from there fast enough...rattlesnakes are bad news. I have no idea how big that cave could be, and really could care less because of those snakes. I have never seen anything like it before, and hope I never see anything like it again...those snakes were evil. Please have a great day! Cascade Caverns are not far from you. Caverns are usually formed in areas that have limestone underground. Not usually good for gold mines but here is some food for thought.
Your cave could be a branch of the Cascade Caverns. They run for miles and usually have many side caves that are always being found for years and years after the original caverns are explored.
It may be separate and it may be an entrance to a new cavern. You just never know until/unless it is explored.
Either way, if it is accessible from the outside there is just no way for you to know how it has been used in the past. If it is a cave I can almost guarantee that someone has been in there before you.
I realize you were there and the idea of a hole in the ground full of rattle snakes can really give anyone the willies. I almost stepped on one once in the bush and I was shaky for more than an hour after that. It really does get to you, doesn't it?
All said and done, you must realize that many of the treasure hunters on this forum, including me, would give almost anything to be given an opportunity to see your cave for themselves. I'll bet you have already received some inquiries in that direction.
I respect your privacy but I too have an overwhelming curiosity such things but I did not live to be 65 years old by being stupid about it.
