Questionable reading on a gold ring

My hunting buddy got a call from a guy who lost his wedding band while raking leaves into a plastic barrel and then hauling the leaves out to a leaf pile at the back of his property.
He said the ring was made of gold and his wife had the ring made for him. We knocked the leaf pile down to about a foot high and I got a solid 76 reading on the At Pro assuming I had found a penny but it turned out to be the ring. The ring sure looks like gold but the 76 reading really surprised me. Has anybody got a high reading like this on a gold ring?

Yes, on heavy gold like class rings. Men's in particular. The one you located looks fairly hefty. And, of course, some high readings that looked gold turned out not to be. HH jim tn

I have had several gold rings come in reading as coins. Probably due to what the gold was amalgamated with, the orientation of the ring to the coil and the mineralization of the matrix it was found in. Gold can read in so many different ID's on all metal detectors.

Gold is a pain in the butt, reads as low as 50 sometimes and as high as 80's there are so many variables that go into the manufacturing of gold jewelry you never know what it is truly made of beside gold

normally when I hit a gold ring it hits on a number and never moves
