I started Metal Detecting around April 2007. I have found some nice stuff but I'm wondering if I'm passing up too much stuff. I have an MXT and at first was digging just about everything. Well, I got tired of digging 300+ holes and finding maybe 1 or 2 keepers. Granted it is worth diggin all those holes for the 1 or 2 keepers but it made me kinda lazy and so I started passing up alot of the shallower signals. For the last two months I've been pretty picky and have only been digging signals that at least 3 inches deep. Should I be digging some of the shallower signals or should I keep passing them up? The older coins I have found have been at least a few inches deep. I have yet to find anything worth keeping that was 0 - 2 inches deep. I hunt mainly in towns that date back to the late 1800's and try to find old house lots or empty lots near or at the oldest part of that town. Should I keep doing what I'm doing or do you suggest I dig those good signals that are shallow? By the way, anyone here in law enforcement? I'm 30 years old and have been a police officer for 9 years here in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.

you kind of answered your own question when your stated it was worth digging all those holes for 1 or 2 keepers. As a general rule, the older coins will be deeper then 2-3". However, as many long time swingers can attest, some of our best finds were only 1-3" deep. In fact, I just recovered a no date Buffalo nickel this morning that was only 2" deep. I personally don't dig shallow zinc hits so that eliminates all post 82 pennies from having to be dug. Welcome to a great hobby and good luck. HH jim tn

Mike,It depends on the ground conditions. If there are a lot of rocks underneath the sod you will dig 100 year old coins 2-3 inches. The other day I dug a V nickle only 3 inches down.Another thing to consider has there been any grounds work and usually if you are digging clad at 7-8 inches and can slaw at the same depth thats a good indication.Bottom line there is a lot of factors to consider how deep to dig targets.

well imo u should dig about everthing some time a coin at 1-2 inch can be masking a coin 4-7 inch deep and same goes for junk. i was hunting in back old church where houses use to be back in ealrly 1900's was getting no good hits any more so i start to dig ever hit that was in a + range i walk out with 4-5 silver coins and 3 bufflo nickels. one hole had 3-4 coins nickels, dimes, quarter. another silver quarter was being mask by a tab soon as i dug the tab up i got nice solid silver quarter reading 1 inch from the tabs it pop out 1941 silver quarter.

when u don't dig u never know and allways will ask this question but there is one thing can help it really depend what type ground u are hunting. i found 1900 indian head penny at 3 inchs and 5 feet to the side i dug up indian head penny date 1993 5 feet away at 7+ inchs and rest of the old coing "like 7-8 more" came from 7+ inchs u just never know.

just to add i hunted place that was really bad with iron soon as i removed the iron boom start getting hit on some old coins imo dig, dig, dig! but some time you got look where u are at and how much digging and if it worth it.

o also u could be passing up newly drop silver/gold rings imo dig, dig ,dig!
