Ok looking for a answer. Just recently bought a new detector that gives me more depth. Now when I go to retrieve my target I usually don't dig a plug. I use a little screwdriver like, or awl to locate my target and usually just squeeze my finger in and out it comes. Now that I am digging deeper it no longer reaches. So what I am asking does anyone know of a longer one that does not bend if you use it to pry with? Any suggestions would be great. I have always used this method as to not do any damage to the lawns that I detect and has worked great. When people see me in the neighborhood and realize no holes it is very easy to get permission. Now if they see me digging the plug then it is more difficult to get permissions

Opinion.....recovering deeper targets, especially among closer trashy targets.....I don't see that the screw driver method will work. Digging a plug will be necessary. If properly done.....the foot print left is virtually unnoticeable.

Look for a screw driver that will be long enough to get down to the depth you want and take a file and round over the tip and you should be ready to go.

Not sure of the number on mine I use, but I got it at a Ace Hardware and is a screwdriver that is narrow blade and small shaft so it goes into the ground easy and around 12-13 inches long. The top is rounded real nice so it is easy on the hands and I have used it to pry with some what and it maybe a little bent, but haven't broke it yet like many of them I have tried in my 40 years of detecting. It is the best I have found and notice I can feel anything it hits better than any Have used, really like it and I know I have at least new extra one as I have lost mine a couple of times and gave some to my hunting buddies. These were around $5 each for them. I carry one in my trash treasure bag along with my Lesche digger and use it for my surface targets, some real deep targets in well manicured lawns and even to hit a deep target after I have dug a plug.

If I don't forget I will check the number on it or maybe a picture and post it plus another one I have found that works good.

When i first started metal detecting all i used was a smoothed out tip screwdriver. I also got proficient using one of those long skinny fish hook pullers to extract the deeper targets if it was too deep to pull out with my fingers. But that was 30 years ago and the detectors back then weren't the deep seekers we have today.

I still use the screw driver for targets only down to a couple or so inches which is almost always clad. If the ID indicates a shallow silver coin or jewelry, i'll plug it.
Prying out especially a 'stubborn' target any deeper than that IMO can cause more damage to the turf than a properly dug plug. And as Hobo lobo said, there's a potential for scratching the target.

If you detect and screwdriver probe a good target say down to 8 inches deep which is unlikely, how are you going to extract it?
