Have Garrett 1500, and have been using on the coin setting as suggested by the company. While MD'ing a soccer field and getting nothing but coin hits tryed md'ing my wedding band, did not get a hit.when I changed the mode to jewerly got hits, am confused. when I got home tryed 4 of my wifes rings on the lawn and same thing my machine shows all in the 5 cent area on bar.Should my machine be sent back to factory or is this the usual. thanks

Nothing wrong with your rig, that's right on the button!! Some gold rings will hit in the nickle range, in fact, pretty much from foil to just below penny. There are so many different impurites in gold jewelery that it makes finding it difficult. There is no one notch that will tell you "That's a gold ring!!"
Be prepared to dig a bunch of trash targets(pulltabs, canslaw, foil) to get the gold!!
Happy hunting!!

Rlink,
I have a 1500, and still learning as we all are. I suspect that you are not realizing the complexities of metal and the surrounding matrix in which they might be buried. There are so many factors that enter into a detector giving a signal of a PROBABLE TARGET. One has to be more seasoned (me included) to really start seeing some of the small differences. Remember air tests are not relative to the real world of metal detecting. Before a ring has been in the ground, it might not give the same target response after being buried for 5 or 10 years. I have three detectors and I think they are all very good ones. Every time I go detecting the dimes and pennies most always get mixed up with respect to ID. Moisture in the ground plays a role too. In my opinion it seems like you are expecting your machine to be more accurate identifying the coin, when in reality it is actually identifying a conductive property of metal that can change because of surrounding factors. Give the old 1500 another 50 to 75 hours and then see what you think.
More thought,-------> Dig learn, dig learn, dig learn. Less discrimination more trash, AND, more treasure.

Higher karat gold tends to read at the nickel range. As the gold % drops, the rings tend to read higher up on the scale depending on what the gold is amalgamated with. They can use copper silver and many other alloys.

:) In the coin mode everything is notched out but coin type metals. Most gold rings fall in the pull tab or foil range. Your detector is fine, try putting it in the coin and jewelry mode if it has one or set it to except pull tabs and I bet it will pick up the ring with no problems. All detectors will act the same way on rings. If you want gold you got to dig trash.

Good Luck,

:)Sorry I should have read your post better you did use the coin and jewelry mode. Jhon's post below hits the nail on the head about rings.

Take Care,
