Question.....

Old Katz

It just hit me, are there ANY VID numbers that are ALWAYS no matter what that are always consistently Junk?
And at what depth? I would think the first one or two inches but after that I'd think one would dig everything.

Every one sets their own digging standards for many reasons Katz, but there are good targets to be found at every VDI number at any depth the detector can reach. Some examples are relic hunters dig targets deep into the iron range, gold/platinum jewelry can be found from -10 to +60 including bracelets and necklaces depending on size and purity. Coin hunters can find older and gold coins all across the VDI spectrum when you include early Indian Heads, nickel three cents, one dollar gold coins and even worn silver like half dimes and silver three cents. We are all familiar with the more modern coins and caches that come in at +60 to +95 and even wrap around to the -90 to -95. Don't forget that the VDI scale is a circle and -95 is right next to +95.

In short, to find it all, you must dig it all.

as Larry said, thats a matter of personal choice. I usually dig things depending on where I am, if on a field I get a VDI of 0 Foil at 6 inches, I'll dig that at all cost, but if on the same field I get it at 1 inch sometimes I save time and search for another target. On areas like a beach I would dig everything above iron

Absolutely NOT, at least not for everyone. VDI numbers (not VID) can be skewed up or down from a "perfect" point based upon many variables, such as target make-up, target depth, target position, ground mineralization, ground moisture/wetness content, ground balance setting, nearby target masking, and a few more things.

It is much easier to say a particular VDI number will MOST-often be a particular coin, such as a US 25

Hey Katz, I was hunting an area yesterday and since it wasn't very trashy I was digging signals in a range that is ALMOST ALWAYS junk in my experience. VDI mid 40's to low 50's, and ended up pulling out 3 foreign coins from a nationality I haven't determined yet. Beautiful details on coins I've never seen before. The writing appears to be Middle eastern or ?. Valuable ? probably not. Exciting surprises that I'm glad I dug up ? Definitely.
