Question, X-terra coils,strange!

Ive Recieved A coil in the mail today for my new x-70 that has not arrived yet but looking at the coil I thought there was a cover on the bottom like on my whites but after further investigation this cover is actually part of the coil and is removable. When I started to remove you can see the black epoxy that covers the coil wires. Is this how all the coils for the xterra family are? Is this coil waterproof? Dont really like because im sure dirt, sand will get inside for sure! Its the 3k cycle round coil, new.

I know the stock and 10.5 coils are like that. The 6 inch coils are like the Whites. I feel the covers are not covers but part of the coil. I can't see taking them off and using the coils because they would catch on the grass. If the epoxy was poured right to the top with rounded edges I wouldn't use the covers. I feel like they should just glue that cover on at the factory.

I just run black electrical tape around the joint. I use several layers. When it starts to wear, I just replace it. It keeps the dirt out.

Good hunting, John K

It is a cover. And although I am sure some do, I wouldn't recommend running the concentric 9-inch coils without their coil cover. I imagine that the epoxy filled bottom is probably pretty tough. But seeing those wires in there reminds me that it is an electronic piece of equipment. And precautions need to be taken to insure it's integrity. I've been swinging some of mine for 30 months and all the 9-inch coils still have their original covers. They snap on the coil securely. Yet can be removed for cleaning, without causing irrepairable damage. If you would happen to wear out or damage the cover on this coil, the cost of replacing it would be far less than replacing a coil that didn't have one. So keep it on, clean it periodically and enjoy the hunt. HH Randy

P.S.
All of the round X-terra coils are waterproof. The elliptical is considered to be water resistant.
