question x-1 probe on explorer

Does the x-1 probe pinpoint in the down mode only or does it pick up from the side also. How large is the probe pattern. Iunderstand the depth is only aprox 3 inches. I have an accumax but it is a toy, instead of a pinpointer. Is the x-1 any better? I am tired of 5 and 6 inch holes, there has to be a better way.

The X-1 senses from the tip and some on the sides down a couple of inches. This is unavoidable but also comes in handy when spiralling down the sides of holes looking for the elusive target which may be off pinpoint or on edge on the side of the hole. The most depth is at the tip.

You say the depth is "only" 3 inches?? No other probe comes close! You can easily do the sides of the hole by sliding the probe down the hole. It is a GREAT probe and well worth the money..
To eliminate bigger holes dug try taking more time when you pinpoint. Most people don't including me when I get that sweet silver tone.

Correction - the Periscope probe senses 3" away. I love my Periscope! I am getting an Explorer tomorrow - <quite excited> - I don't think I'll need the X1 since I have a Periscope. Never used a Minelab before; always used Whites, so it will be interesting to compare.

I bought the X-1 at the same time I bought my XS. Since that time, I have purchased a "Periscope" and, I rarely use the X-1 now (except sometimes at the beach). Don't get me wrong, I think the X-1 is a great probe and well worth the money. But, if you want to dig smaller holes, the Periscope and Hole Hog combination can't be beat (IMHO). Not only does the Periscope give you more information about whether to dig or not, but you know exactly where the object is and exactly how deep. Hope this helps.

I also own the Periscope and the X1. I love both of them. I'm still new to the X1 but I feel that I will have a definite purpose for it. I feel like I'll always use the Periscope more, as it locates targets faster, and often I don't even have to bend over very much to locate the target before I ever get the digging tool out. It works exactly as advertised and it is a great product.
There are times when the Periscope is not the tool for the job however. Mainly, it rocky ground, gravel, or ground that is dryed rock hard. Another use is when you have a really deep target that is too difficult to tightly pinpoint. At that time, it is best just to dig a big deep plug, and start scanning with the X1 until you narrow it down.
The main thing for me is not to have to give up on a target. With both probes, I pretty much cover all the possibilities.
It is an expense to be sure, and it ends up being some extra weight to carry around. Until something better comes along though, it is worth it for me.

I too have a periscope and I got it back in Feb and still havent used it yet as I love my X1 and the S 1 probes, but I know the Periscope has it purpose. I had a Periscope before and sold it after a couple of weeks as it took to long to find the target and sometime I know i spent 10 minnutes locating and IDing the target where as the X1 or S1 if it is close to the surface i turn on the probe and find it. If deeper I dig a plug and locate it fast. Now where the Periscope would be good is in the areas you dont want to dig unless nessesary and only a small hole and the ground cant be rocky or very hard as I found out before.
I just got to get out with the Scope and use it more and get used to it and maybe it will work out for me, but time is important when I detect so maybe this is why I leave it at home.
