question: pinpointers attached to the e-trac

gozze

New member
I have noticed on a few online postings that some people have pinpointers attached to their detector. I've never seen that before and would like to find out more.

I've never owned a pinpointer (except the one that kellyco sent with my e-trac) and think that one attached to the detector would be great. Deep signals over 10+ get lost sometimes in NY.

Is there a brand that works better with the e-trac? Where do you find them? Whats the price range?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Check out the Garrett Pro Pointer It is awesome and much less expensive. Mine has saved me a ton of time and effort digging. Plus it doesn't add weight to your detector. Worth getting!!!
I don't feel i'm missing out not having the Sun Ray model that goes through your detector.

It's called the X-1 Probe made by Sunray. They have an ad at the top of the page. Think they run $189.00. I have one and love it.

Either one has its pros and cons. If you are lookin for one that attaches to the Etrac then the X-1 is the one you want. If you want a stand alone, I don't think I will get a argument in saying Garrett has that covered with the Propointer, I have used both. Like them both.

I have both and the Sun-Ray pin-pointer is by far the best accessory you can have for a detector besides a good digger. The Garrett is in my opinion the best hand held pin-pointer but if you got a silver target in a hole full of nails or tabs that Garrett will hit on every thing in the hole where the X-1 won't hit on anything except what your detector hit on. And if you want to hit the pin-point button on your detector and zoom in on the target the X-1 will do that also without sounding off on everything in the hole. The X-1 for the E-Trac comes already mounted on a new upper shaft just change them out and you are good to go. And the probe itself is no heavier than the Garrett probe. Just try and remember to switch back to your main coil when you get the target. Not a thing wrong with the Garrett probe but if you try a Sun-Ray you will wonder how you got along without it. The reason I bought the Garrett pin-pointer is because Sun-Ray does not have a probe for the G-2 yet but when they make one I will put one on that machine. HH :minelab:

I just got my X1 probe today. I tried it out in the back yard for about 30 minutes before it got dark. I dug a little brass pin thingy, a pull tab, and a 1968 Dime. The dime was about 5" deep. I had no problem using the X1 to gradually dig my way down to the dime and I got a number readout each time I checked the hole which was cool too. So far I'm liking it.

I have the Sun Ray X-1 on my E-trac and love it. I really can't tell that much difference in weight with or with out it. I didn't buy one at first but soon found out how bad I needed it.

What I really love about it is the ability to see the ID numbers while your pin pointing as if there is more then one target in the hole, which there often is, you can easily tell which target your locating. I've never owned a pin pointer before the X-1 but I'll never be with out it again as I've located some very small hard to find targets with mine. Sure saves a lot of time. Rick IL

After reading lots of posts about pin pointers and having a bad shoulder I ended up getting the Garrett pro pointer as well. It works fantastic for me as I dont use a pinpointer in most diggs but need one every once in a while. I keep it attatched in its harrness on the side of my pouch and it is very accessable there and simple to work. THis week I hit a coin spill, spills take allot of time with the e trac to pinpoint, kneel down dig, for each coin and serperate them out to get all the coins. Instead I knelt down and used the pro pointer. It was to easy and tons of fun with that pinpointer. I probably would of left it half finished after finding 25 memorial pennies but was having so much fun with that little PP that I dug all 50 memorials out and 2 quarters. Every once in a while I would have to stand up and swing the detector to find the ones that were further away then Just sweep the pointer tip up and I knew right were they were and poped em out. A full roll of pennes spread out over 4 feet made very easy with the PP. Best part for ME is that I dont spend all day with added weight on my machine for the small percentage of times I use a pinpointer.
OF course in nice lawns and carefull digging areas....ALWAYS use a pinpointer if you want to come back over and over.

good luck

You just can't beat having target ID with your pinpointer. Hands down that is the biggest plus you get with the X-1. It weighs about 6oz. so if you hunt all day it will add to the shoulder ache. If you hunt in heavy brush or around trees, you will hate it as it will get hung up on limbs. If you are the typical hunter, there really isn't much of a comparison between the Garrett and the Sunray. Target ID for the win.

From what I've seen so far - this is my opinion of the SunRay Probe and the Garrett ProPointers ...

Bottom line - everyone that has a SunRay probe loves it - great depth - target ID comes through on to the screen - ID's the target so you don't waste time pulling junk metal out of the hole.
The SunRay probe weighs 11 oz. - but it's usually mounted on near the battery compartment - so the added weight in not that noticeable.

I have two Garrett Pro Pointers - I really like the Pro Pointers - I went with them because your not tied to your machine - your not adding 11 oz. to an already heavy metal detector, no draw on the machines battery system. The Pro Pointer easily fits in the front pocket of your pants if you don't want to wear a belt and pouch. Some times I mark several targets with stakes or golf tee's - put the machine down - and return with my digger and the Pro Pointer and dig all of the targets at once. This gives you a break from dragging the machine around and your not taking your headphones off and on all day. A great way to hunt when the weather's bad - you can put your machine in a dry place or cover it over - if it's raining or snowing while your digging the targets.

To each his own - good luck !
