Question or two on silver umax

Though I am not a "newbie" on MD, I have never owned or used a Tesoro before. So I have a few, and maybe stupid, questions to ask about this detector. I have been using some of the "other guys" detectors for about 10 years, give or take. However I have noticed that most of the older coins that I have found in my area are really deep in the ground, around the 7 to 8 inch depth range. I can find them on occasion but when I crank the sens up the detectors tend to get a bit erratic. So i was just wondering (have watched the videos on youtube) if the "silver" could hit these depths on a consistent basis? I'm located in northern Illinois so mineralization should not be a factor, or much of one. How happy are the "silver" users and what kind of depths are you getting? I know that most coin hunting is done at lesser depths but for whatever reason it seems the coins drop down quite a bit in my area (have found 10 year old dimes at a solid 4 inches). Just wondering and any feedback, comments, etc are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.............
Jeff

The deepest effective range I have seen on the Silver uMax with the stock coil is 6 inches. That was in "friendly" soil.

I have been told that the Silver uMax with a 12x10 coil (and recalibrated to that size coil by Tesoro) goes significantly deeper. Up to 10+ inches in low mineralized soil.

I am told that larger than coin sized targets will be detected even deeper (no surprise there).

I've used the Silver Sabre

Hi Jazzman,

I have the Silver uMax and very nice soil and I can pick up a silver dime at 7.5 inches in my test garden with the stock 8 inch round coil. That is in Disc mode too. However, those are ideal conditions, where I know the soil is clean, the dime is flat, and i know exactly whre to swing the coil to get the signal. I've never found coins more than 4-5 inches or so in real -world hunting conditions.

I also have a 10X 12 coil from my Outlaw that I have tried on the Silver and it did NOT go any deeper. Maybe if I sent it in to get tuned specifically to the Silver uMax it would hit 10 inches like some are claiming it will? But then, it wouldnt be tuned to my Outlaw anymore...

mojotrout,

If you sent in your Silver

Thanks for that info Hombre! I thought it was a sensitivity adjustment.

Im going to send my Silver and 10x12 coil in for a tuning up!

Jazzman58, I am in the same boat as you as far the depth of the silver coins. From what I can tell using my Silver uMax, I would guess 8" maybe a tiny bit more under ideal conditions. 7" on a wheatie is my best so far. I can tell you this, if it less than 7-8 inches it will not get by the Silver. I hunt with disc set just short of zinc. When you get to a trashy area you will hear lots of pops and clicks. Thats not EMI interference, it is the disc circuit partially discriminating out the trashy items. When you hear this slow the swing speed way down, overlap the passes, and you will find the coins in the trash. The Silver uMax is excellent at this due to it's great target separation and fast recovery speed. My best coins this year have come from the trashiest areas. The Silver is no depth demon, but in the depth range it works at, it is a coin killer for not a lot of money. I may buy another deeper detector, but Silver is here for the long haul.

Thanks Rainyday101. I'm fairly certain I will get one on order here in the next week or so. Now it's just a question of finding the "best deal".

jazzman, to get the best deal call one of the forum sponsors. Note I said call them. I personally use Miller MDZ. He will give great pricing via the phone, ships fast and free, and can answer any questions without bias.

Thanks Monte, I have followed your post for a few years now and respect your insight on these matters. Perhaps I am going to have to rethink what I need to do next. Thanks again to everyone again for their responses to this post. You have ALL given me something to think about/kick around. Thanks again.
