Question on "whisper"

Recent discussion here about the wiggle has led me to wonder about the "whisper". Can anyone give me some insight on the whisper? In Clives book it is mentioned. On my GT, when I get a signal it is always one volume level, LOUD. Could be my hearing is not able to pick up a whisper(too much Led Zeppelin a long time ago).

I hunt in discriminate mode only, never all metal.

I have never heard the whisper either. Sometimes just a change in threshold pitch. Otherwise, the audio distinctly jumps up from the threshold...even on the weakest hits.
Maybe too much Led Zepplin and Ozzy for me too.

I dont have clives books anymore so I cant reference it, only go by memory, but isnt he talking about deep targets?

with your detector on, wave a coin close to your coil and note the strength of the signal, then progressively move away from the coil while your still waving the coin and the audio drops. I would guess the furthest away from the coil but still audible would be a whisper. quite common for beach hunters where stuff drops down quickly in loose sand.

if thats not it perhaps you could reference a little more about it?

thanks,
Neil

I could see this whisper thing in all metal, as the volume gets progressivly weaker until there is only the slightest bump in the threshold, but in disc the detector either hits or misses for me. Nothing questionable or requiring close listening. Possibly in silent search......which I NEVER use.

I would try what Neil says about moving a coin further away from the coil and hear how the signal will get weaker and smaller as I feel this is what Clive is saying in his book. I will also add that you need to swing the coil slow to get the first sign of a whisper as if you are going too fast the coil can not see it. Some call this the change in threshold as it may go from the low growl of iron to a positive higher tone and if not going slow you will never hear this. After you hear this then you have to do the Sovereign wiggle over just that small area trying to get the tones better and climbing to see if it is a good target or a false off of iron. A good target will repeat in the same spot while iron will not in most cases.

Hi Art,

I dont use the silent search either. In disc or all metal I hear an audio volume drop as my coils get further away from a target. Its progressive, can guess target depths usually if its a coin sized target. works the same on the explorer.

............On the Sovereign, I can raise the searchcoil and see how high that it will repond to the signal!! A strong signal will be able to be detected from 6 to 12 inches above the ground while a deep target may only be detected a few inches above the ground ! This is in both modes but mainly in the discriminate mode! Happy Hunting....................Joe

That's one of the ways to get a rough depth estimate. Seldom use it myself. Can tell by the response about how big or deep anything is.
