Question on very wet ground and iron falses..

I finally went out hunting yesterday and the soccer field which yeilded some deep wheats last year was very wet.
I was getting alot of iron falses that would sound good on the first pass but would mostly null out after centering the target and swepping over it a few times.
I heard wet ground can effect the Explorer and I was wandering what to try.
I tried lowering my sens. and switched from manual to auto. to see which was calmer. It's heard to tell if it was iron and a good target or just iron alone. The plugs would fall apart to I did not want to dig everything till the ground dries out a little. I lowered my gain to 5 so I could gauge the size a little better. But maybe I should have tried Ferrous tones.
I was running iron mask -9 and switched to a coin program which helped a little. And my sens. ended up at 10. Deep was on. Thanks Ev

wet ground effects the targets.......but can be to your advantage....do a small wiggle over the target and repeatable is a digger....ferrous tones work great for me Ev so give it a try.Put your gain on 6 and later up to 7 but that will give more falsing maybe, till your use to it....take your time and go slow IM -9 will work to start with then adjust from there.HH Bri

iron will also have a broader or larger pintoint with a tapering sound and null on a resweep also..coins will have a small pinpoint unless it's a silver dollar <IMG SRC="/forums/images/tongue.gif" BORDER=0 ALT,":p"> and most will have a crisp tone..sharp and sweet.......most

AND MAYBE I'LL TRY MY 5 INCH COIL TILL I GET THE HANG OF THING.
OH
I GOT ONE WHEAT BUT IT WASN'T DEEP.:) EV

many start with a smaller coil and it will help a lot at the start, when you think you have a good target tho if it does not have a short crisp sweet tone in ferrous and only a one way tone assuming you have circled it a bit then more than likely it's iron...iron will have a loud to tapering tone(or a warble tone) and sound good one way and upon a resweep the other direction will give you nothing.well you can dig a few to see whats there if anything, could also be a false. I know a lot of cellar holes have iron that rotted long ago and the only target left is the miniscule particles in the ground for a rotted halo effect and orange colored ground is all I find but try ferrous and IM -8 to start with your choice auto or manual and maybe fast&deep on but thats your choice also, listen for the higher toned mostly repeatable smaller pinpointed targets to start.....unless you can dig all and go slow enough not to be mixing targets (good) near targets(bad).......have fun too .....HH Bri

are the best times to hunt iron infested areas.. too wet and too much of an iron halo which can over power any good targets nearby.. hunt them sites in all conditions.. every little change can sometimes let you hear something another condition may not

That's a real good point Jim.
When the ground is "soaking" wet it's much harder to search my usual sites which are pretty trashy but as it dries out it improves (at least up to a certain point).
I've found this to be true to some extent regardless of the detector used. The more sensitive modern detectors only make it worse ... even with all their latest technologies.
Sure is nice to see winter on the way out - can't wait to get some detecting in.
HH ... Gord.
