Question on the Golden umax

Neil

Well-known member
Can someone tell me what the 4 tones are preset at? Im guessing they are preset? I understand the wide/narrow window of the tones and thats adjustable but where do the tones actually sit on the disc scale?
Thank you
Neil

I can honestly say I have heard 4 separate tones with my golden, the two middle tones are very close. The way I detect , the golden is a good fit. To me ,tones are the way to go. I hunt with no notch, wide or narrow depending where I am at. Discrimination set at minimum or no higher than preset and threshold at 2 o' clock. I use the standard 9x8 coil and do well in trashy sites as well as open areas. The middle tones are close so you need head phones. I use clip- on ear buds for over 10 years and like them better than over the ear headphones. Don't get me wrong there are some very good headphones on the market, and I have tried them but a good pair of ear-buds work for me. Practice with different targets and use phones, you will hear the tones. If you like coins and jewelry the Golden Umax is for you.

Hi Neal,
Part of me doesn't want to respond to this request becaused I'm pissed at Tesoro for discontinuing the Golden uMax. But the other part thinks that maybe someday someone might go to work there that understands and will someday make a good user adjustable tone id machine.

The only tones that are preset are the high tone (high conductive coins like dimes and above, and the medium high tone (zinc cent). In a properly adjusted Golden, these two tones are the only ones preset to a specific conductive range.

The low tone's lower boundry is also preset for iron but it's upper boundry depends on the Notch Width setting.

The Notch Width controls the middle low tone's conductive range.

The tones cover 1) iron and foil, 2) rings, nickels and some pull tabs, 3) most pull tabs and screw caps, 4) pennies, silver coins and jewelry. A special tone for targets that are causing the machine to saturate is also included. Third is a Notch Filter discriminate. Notch discriminate will allow you to tune your Golden

Maybe they discontinued it to make room for the new multi-tone machine? Time will tell.

I'll say this, once you really learn how to use the Golden

Can you pass on which earbuds you use that give a decent sound? In the winter with a wool cap on that might me a good option.

Thanks Mike. So thats how they are set up. I understand there are two versions also as Ive read about old tones and new tones. Perhaps that is just the pitch of the tone? Im gonna keep my eye out for a used one I think.

Has Tesoro actually said they are coming out with something new this coming year? Even if it was something repackaged in some way, combining options with various detectors, could make for an interesting detector. Sometimes waiting for new machines seems like it goes on forever and its best to just go and get whats available.

Hi Neal
I don't have a favorite brand of ear buds, but what I like are the buds with ear clips. They stay more secure if I happen to hook the cord on anything. I do like buds with silicone ear pieces, they seem to be the most comfortable. They are cool in the summer months and if you hunt when it's cold you can wear a hood or sock hat with no trouble. Good hunting, Neal:thumbup:

Hey Mike,

If the Golden uMax has been discontinued, why am I seeing for sale on some on-line retailers? Is there something wrong with the machines that might still be available. The Golden uMax is also on the Tesoro website. I hope they are still available, unless the new model, once it is announced is similar in features.

Hihosilver, folks still have to get rid of inventory. Per Tesoro, the Golden was one of the slowest sellers they had. However I'm sure there is nothing wrong with them.

Regards why Tesoro still has it on their website, you'll have to call and ask them that question. Phone number off their website is 1-928-771-2646

Well, I did as Mike suggested and called Tesoro. I make no claim here to speak for the company. I called, they put me through to a tech (who I will not name) and he told me that the Golden uMax was indeed out of production and that there were no plans at this time to bring it back. He then told me that their new model (hopefully out by this summer) will more than likely have tones. He wouldn't say much more than that.

Wow, I am disappointed, and that sounds troubling that they are hoping that the new detector will be out by summer? I guess I had my expectations set too high. Hopefully we will have more solid information by the end of January.

Combine the Vaq and Golden, with the alt disc feature of the Tejon, and HOT technology, in the new machine...put me on the list for one !
